Have you always lived a fit lifestyle? How did you get started?
No. In 2012 I decided I want to be a better me and started to eat clean and train hard.
What made you decide to enter your first OCR?
I love a challenge and when one of my friends said we should try it… I was first in the queue.
You have managed to do so well in every OCR you seem to enter, what motivates you and what about them do you love?
The feeling of achievement each time you finish all the obstacles – knowing you worked so hard for it!
What do you think are some of the most important lessons OCR’s can teach someone?
The most important lesson for me was that you can do anything if you really want to.
“Look UP * Get UP and never give up.”
Tell us a bit about any injuries you sustained during your races and how did you get through them and continue?
“Hanneke broke her ankle during her last warrior race. Approaching one of the penultimate obstacles, a sort of rope-hanging-relay swing thingy (this is one armed swinging hey) Well, a 12 metre long rope relay, where you have to hold your entire body weight with one arm, whilst swinging from a rope is no picnic (yes, I tried it). And it was on the 2nd swing through that Hanneke fell and broke her ankle.
Broken ankle and all, Hanneke spent another hour trying to get through, making another 15 or so attempts. Each attempt ended with her falling again and again on that broken ankle. And finally, she sucked it up and got herself across and by grace she finished her last warrior race 3rd.” ~ africanman.co.za
What are your future plans?
I am planning to do all the OCR Races in SA but my main focus is preparing for world championships in October 2015.
What are your top Nutrition tips when losing fat?
Try to eat as natural as possible. Anything that in its natural form works for me. I don’t do processed foods!
Do you weigh all your food and track the numbers when it comes to calories of everything you eat?
No I don’t.
I do not think it is necessary as long as you listen to your body and only eat when you are hungry and when you eat, don’t eat processed food.
Do you believe in using supplements?
Sometimes we need to put back what we take out. So as an athlete I use basic supplements.
What does a typical training week look like for you? How do you structure your training routines?
I train Sunday to Friday 2 – 3 times a day every week, with one day complete rest.
- Training @ 5am
- Training@ 12pm
- Training@ 5pm
Do you ever have an off day at training or one where you don’t feel motivated? How do you deal with that?
Yes I do. I just close my eyes pray and then just do it!
What other forms of exercises do you enjoy?
Anything from Netball to functional training.
What are your 3 favourite exercises and why?
-
Running
-
Calisthenics
-
Functional training
That’s everything I need to prepare me for my races.
What advice and training tips would you give the ladies to developing strong and lean abs?
Don’t do ab training only… Rather do functional training to target more than one specific area.. This way you’ll achieve your strong and lean abs much quicker!
