Sometimes we get caught up in the big exercises like squats, bench presses and deadlifts, while there are many other great exercises. While these other exercises may not be as ‘compound’ as the ones just mentioned, they can isolate certain muscles and develop those specific muscles a lot more, or they can just add some variety to your workouts.
The crucial thing is, to just feel each exercise and see how it works for you. Some people feel certain movements more than others, and some people’s muscles respond better to certain things. So give them a try and if they work for you, then that’s perfect!
Close grip chest pulls on pull down machine
This may look like a back exercise since it is being done on the lat pulldown machine, but in order to focus more on the chest be sure to do the following:
- Keep your elbows together.
- Squeeze the chest and keep your arms in front of you.
- Keep the movement controlled.

close grip machine bench press
close grip ball (squeeze) push ups
bodyweight tricep extensions
Glute Bridge / Hip thrust
push ups into handstand
