How did you get started in athletics and sprinting/running and how long have you been doing it for?

From grade 1 at the time everyone was doing it, so it seemed fun at the time.

How do you manage to stay motivated and consistent throughout all your training?

I keep reminding myself of my goals. In order to achieve them I know that I need to train hard.

Is it difficult to balance studying and having a social life with your training?

Yes its is. Sometimes it feels like I don’t have a social life at all. The people I do athletics with are my friends so I socialise a lot with them.

What are some of your achievements and one which you are most proud of?

“I came 5th at the world student games in Kazan last year! But I think I’m most proud of winning two gold medals last year at the SA student champs in the 400 metres and 400 metres Hurdles. I ran 6 400’s in 2 days! It was tough but all worth it.”

How are your preparations for the Olympics 2016 coming along and how does it feel to be able to represent your country at the Olympics?

I don’t really know how it feels because I have not yet been to the Olympics. I do my best everyday and train to the best of my abilities and I hope it is enough.  I would love to be on that track in Rio 2016. It would be a dream come true! I’m in my final year of study this year! But I would love to study something else next year just to do more athletics.  Maybe ill start my law career  in 2017 after the Olympics! I don’t like to plan that far in the future and would rather take it year by year!

“For now I love to run, and studying helps me to get a balance in life and take my mind of athletics!”

Give us a brief description of your philosophy on your diet? Do you follow a certain diet or way of eating at all?

Yes I do!

  • I eat 7 times a day.
  • Small portions.
  • I try to stay away from sugar(its not always easy).
  • I eat 3 fruits a day and a lot of vegetables.
  • I try not to eat after 7 pm but I’m only human and sometimes cant help but eat a mid night snack 😉

Do you incorporate any weight training into your workouts?

Yes gym 3 times a week.

Give us a brief description of your training regime and on average how long do you workout for?

Days that I gym I will gym in the morning for 2 hours and then 2 hours again on the track in the afternoon. If we don’t gym then sometimes we will do hurdles in the morning and 2 hours on the track. We gym 3 times a week and train 5 to 8 sessions a week. It just depends.

What are your three favourite exercises?

1. 5 x 300 ‘s

2. 3 x (2 x 200)

3. 5 x 200’s.

Its quick. I like the fast stuff more then the endurance based exercises.

What are your top training tips?

  • Always finish a session, ALWAYS. Even if you walk the last bit.
  • Always give it everything you got. What you can never allow yourself is to fail because of a lack of will.

Do you enjoy playing any other sports?

Yes I love playing tennis just for the fun of it.
