Saunas are a timeless staple for those seeking relaxation and health benefits. Using a sauna regularly offers numerous advantages. This listicle explores the multifaceted benefits of regular sauna use, providing insights into physical health and personal well-being.

Introduction to Saunas

Whether traditional or infrared, saunas provide a controlled environment where individuals can experience intense heat that prompts sweating. The process serves as a relaxation method and offers a wealth of health benefits. From cardiovascular improvements to enhanced mental well-being, the allure of the sauna lies in its ability to be both therapeutic and enjoyable.

Improved Physical Health

Regular sauna sessions can significantly impact physical health. Sauna use can help improve blood circulation, which helps lower blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease.

The intense heat of a sauna session can elevate heart rate, akin to moderate exercise, which aids in weight loss and boosts metabolism. For individuals with chronic conditions, such as arthritis, the heat provided by saunas can also relieve muscle tension and pain, contributing to an overall better quality of life.

Mental Health Benefits

Incorporating sauna sessions into one’s routine can yield significant mental health benefits. The quiet, warm environment promotes relaxation and stress reduction, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The endorphin release triggered by a sauna session can improve mood and provide a sense of well-being. Saunas have also been linked to improved sleep patterns, as the cooling down period after a session can aid in falling asleep faster and achieving deeper rest.

Detoxification and Skin Health

Saunas play a role in detoxifying the body by inducing sweating, which helps eliminate toxins and impurities. Sweating cleanses the skin and improves its tone and clarity, leading to a healthier complexion.

Regular sauna use can open up pores, remove dead skin cells, and increase blood flow to the skin, resulting in a more radiant appearance. By incorporating sauna sessions into one’s routine, individuals can support their body’s natural detoxification processes, ultimately promoting better skin health.

Enhanced Recovery for Athletes

For athletes, saunas offer an effective method for enhancing recovery and performance. The heat from a sauna session helps relax muscles and reduces inflammation, making it an excellent post-workout ritual.

Improved blood circulation aids in delivering oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles, accelerating recovery and reducing the risk of injury. Athletes who regularly use saunas may experience improved endurance and performance thanks to these recovery benefits.

Social and Personal Well-Being

Beyond the physical and mental health benefits, saunas also contribute to social and personal well-being. Many people enjoy saunas as a social activity, allowing for moments of connection and conversation in a relaxed setting.

For those who prefer solitude, saunas can also offer a quiet space for personal reflection and relaxation. Whether used alone or with others, saunas provide an opportunity to escape the daily grind and focus on self-care.

Safety and Precautions

While the benefits of saunas are extensive, it is important to consider safety and precautions to ensure a positive experience. Individuals should stay hydrated before and after a sauna session to prevent dehydration.

Limit session duration to avoid overheating, especially for beginners. People with specific health conditions, such as cardiovascular issues, should consult a healthcare professional before regular sauna use. By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can enjoy the myriad benefits of saunas safely.

Have you ever paused to consider the lurking dangers concealed beneath the captivating screens? It’s time to delve into the untold side of social media, one that often goes unnoticed amidst the rising numbers. According to the latest article by Forbes, the global count of social media users has surged to an astonishing 4.9 billion people. And brace yourself because this number is projected to skyrocket to approximately 5.85 billion users by 2027.

Here, we will explore the untold health risks associated with social media, shedding light on the alarming consequences that seem to have slipped through the cracks.

How Excessive Screen Time Takes a Toll on Physical Well-Being

Excessive screen time not only affects your physical health but also has specific impacts on various aspects of your well-being. Let’s explore some of these effects in detail, shedding light on the hidden perils of prolonged screen use.

Reduced Cholesterol

Prolonged screen time often leads to a sedentary lifestyle, which can contribute to reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. When your bodies remain inactive for extended periods, such as during excessive screen use, the levels of HDL cholesterol can decline, increasing the risk of heart disease.

According to a recent study published in the National Library of Medicine, extended screen usage of more than three hours is associated with a significant decrease in HDL cholesterol. The study suggests that several factors contribute to this correlation, including the influence of extensive food advertisements, impaired regulation of food intake while engaged with screens, and a sedentary lifestyle resulting in reduced movement and physical activity.

Decreased Cortisol

The constant exposure to screens and the digital world can disrupt your stress hormone levels, particularly cortisol. Excessive screen time can lead to reduced cortisol levels in the body, which may seem beneficial at first glance. However, chronically low cortisol levels can impair your body’s stress response system, potentially leading to a weakened immune system, fatigue, and difficulty managing stress effectively.

Based on research findings, cortisol, a stress hormone produced by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, is considered a biomarker for stress in pediatric studies. Both low and high cortisol levels have been associated with poor performance.

Normally, cortisol levels are lowest during nighttime and gradually increase as waking hours approach, experiencing a sharp spike upon waking up. However, the study reveals that school-aged children who spend up to three hours per day using media exhibit a diminished cortisol surge one hour after waking up, which can have negative consequences.

Disrupted Insulin Balance and Diabetes

Sedentary behavior, one that includes excessive screen time, often associated with excessive screen use, can lead to weight gain and obesity. This weight gain, combined with the lack of physical activity, can disrupt insulin balance and impair the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels. Over time, this can contribute to the development of insulin resistance and increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.

Recent studies have discovered that insulin, a hormone crucial for regulating metabolism and fat storage, is secreted by the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Insulin resistance, a condition where cells are unable to utilize insulin effectively, plays a significant role in the development of diabetes and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Higher screen time, such as watching television, playing video games, or using the computer for an additional hour each day, can lead to a 5% decrease in insulin sensitivity. What’s more, other studies have linked as little as two hours of daily screen time to abnormal insulin levels.

However, when you understand these specific impacts of excessive screen time on your physical health, you can make informed decisions about your screen usage and adopt healthier habits to mitigate these risks.

How Social Media Undermines Mental Health

The prevalence of social media in your lives has brought forth a range of detrimental effects on your mental well-being, often overlooked and underestimated. You need to recognize these hidden perils that social media poses to your mental health and shed light on the specific consequences that tend to go unnoticed.

Depression and Suicidal Behavior

The constant exposure to carefully curated, idealized versions of others’ lives can lead to feelings of inadequacy, social comparison, and a decline in self-esteem. The negative impact of cyberbullying and online harassment further exacerbates these mental health concerns, pushing individuals towards depressive states and potentially harmful behaviors.

Recent studies have highlighted the concerning rise of social media-induced depression, especially among the younger generation. Unawareness of effective social media usage can lead to feelings of jealousy, self-doubt, and low self-esteem. Sleep disturbance, resulting from excessive screen use at night, is identified as a mediating factor connecting social media to depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts in adolescents. Smartphone dependence, messaging frequency, and pre-bedtime anxiety about message replies are linked to mood swings, suicidal thoughts, and self-injury.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

Excessive engagement with social media platforms has been associated with attention difficulties and symptoms resembling ADHD. The constant scrolling, multitasking, and exposure to an overwhelming amount of information can impair concentration, focus, and impulse control. This can have long-term implications on cognitive function and academic performance, especially among young individuals who are more susceptible to these challenges.

Studies have shown that children in contemporary society may display varying symptoms of ADHD, including inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. This kind of behavior, often associated with ADHD, is linked to the amount of time spent on screens. Excessive use of digital devices is commonly observed among younger children and teenagers, both among those who have been diagnosed with ADHD and those who are believed to be dealing with attention-related challenges or impulsivity.

Neuropsychological Effects

Excessive social media usage can lead to altered brain structure and function. The constant need for instant gratification, excessive dopamine release from notifications and likes, and the addictive nature of social media can impact the reward circuitry in the brain. This can result in decreased attention span, reduced empathy, impaired decision-making, and increased susceptibility to addictive behaviors.

Research indicates that internet addiction in any form leads to structural changes in the brain, particularly in the frontal lobe. These changes affect the brain’s ability to filter out irrelevant information and cope with demanding tasks. Multitasking across various media devices has been studied, revealing that continuous attention to screens can replace real-world engagement.

College students who demonstrate high scores in multitasking have been observed to display diminished grey matter in the anterior cingulate cortex, an area linked to cognitive control and the regulation of socioemotional functions. Recent allegations and studies, including those referenced by TorHoerman Law, have raised concerns about the impact of Instagram on all social media platforms. Studies indicate that how individuals engage with Instagram can significantly affect their mental well-being, particularly among young girls and women.

While the duration of Instagram usage alone may not directly lead to negative outcomes, it has been observed that individuals who seek social validation on the platform are more prone to experiencing mental health issues. Individuals who have experienced adverse effects on their mental health are taking action by pursuing legal recourse through an Instagram lawsuit. These individuals are seeking legal remedies for the negative consequences they have encountered as a result of using the platform.

The lawsuit highlights the growing recognition of the impact that social media, particularly Instagram, can have on individuals’ well-being. By filing a lawsuit, these individuals are aiming to hold Instagram accountable for its alleged role in exacerbating mental health issues, especially among vulnerable populations such as young girls and women.

Social Media and Poor Sleep Quality

Social media’s impact on your sleep quality is a significant yet often overlooked peril to your overall well-being. The constant need for validation, fear of missing out, and endless scrolling can keep you engaged with your devices well into the night, stealing precious hours of restorative sleep.

A recent study published in Wiley Online Library shed light on the connection between social media usage and poor sleep quality. The findings revealed that a significant majority of students, approximately 82.1%, accessed social media within two hours before going to sleep, indicating a notable nocturnal engagement with these platforms.

Plus, the study found that a substantial proportion of students, around 62.1%, utilized social media while in bed, blurring the boundaries between screen time and rest. Disturbingly, nearly 29.7% of students reported engaging with social media while attempting to fall asleep, further highlighting the detrimental impact of these activities on the quality of sleep.

Interestingly, the study also found that a significant percentage of students, approximately 18.3%, experienced delays in falling asleep as a direct result of their nighttime social media use. These findings suggest that the stimulating and addictive nature of social media can disrupt the natural sleep onset process, leading to extended periods of wakefulness before finally succumbing to slumber.

The Rise of Social Media Addiction

Today, an increasing number of individuals are succumbing to the allure of constant online connection and struggling to break free from the grip of social media platforms. Shockingly, social media addiction shares similarities with other forms of behavioral addiction, such as gambling or substance abuse. The compulsive need to check notifications, obsessively scroll through feeds, and the fear of missing out (FOMO) contribute to a cycle of craving and seeking validation.

The design of social media platforms is intentionally crafted to foster addiction, employing various techniques to keep users engaged for longer periods. Features like endless scrolling, personalized notifications, and dopamine-driven reward systems tap into your psychological vulnerabilities, making it challenging to resist the allure and pull away from the screens.

Extensive research has consistently demonstrated that frequent social media usage can give rise to addiction, subsequently exerting adverse effects on various aspects of adolescents’ lives. Multiple studies have highlighted the detrimental impact of social media addiction on academic performance, social interactions, and interpersonal relationships among young individuals.

Empirical evidence suggests that addictive tendencies towards social media can lead to a decline in school performance, as excessive time spent on these platforms detracts from academic focus and engagement. Moreover, addictive behaviors associated with social media usage can hinder adolescents’ ability to develop healthy social skills and maintain meaningful face-to-face interactions.

As adolescents become increasingly consumed by the allure of social media, it becomes essential to recognize the potential determinants it poses to their school performance, social behavior, and interpersonal relationships.

Summing Up

The pervasive influence of social media on your health is a topic that deserves greater attention. From the impact on mental health to physical well-being, social media poses significant risks that often go unnoticed. The detrimental effects of poor physical and mental health, poor sleep quality, and addiction are just a few of the consequences you must confront. It is imperative to strike a balance between the advantages of social media and your overall well-being. It is time to take control of your online experiences and prioritize your health above the addictive allure of social media.

Let us step out from behind the screens, embrace real-life connections, and create a healthier relationship with technology. By doing so, you can mitigate the unnoticed perils of social media on your health and strive for a more balanced and fulfilling existence.

A healthy lifestyle is a sure-shot way of ensuring that your physical, mental, and emotional well-being isn’t compromised. However, with so many different people saying many different things, it can be challenging to choose where to start.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all model. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is the best way to ensure your overall health and well-being. In this article, we’ll dive into five health tips that you can adopt for a healthy lifestyle. Most of these tips are consistent with all body types; hence, you can easily incorporate them into your daily life. However, feel free to consult a healthcare professional for further clarity.

So, let’s get started on the path to a healthier you!

Be Mindful of Environmental Toxins

Environmental toxins like arsenic, lead, mercury, radon, asbestos, formaldehyde, etc., can significantly impact your health. Out of these, asbestos is one of the most dangerous toxins. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral used in the construction of residential areas and industries in the past. It was also used in electronics and furniture for decades until authorities deemed it harmful. Prolonged asbestos exposure can cause many dangerous lung problems. The most common lung problem caused by asbestos is mesothelioma, a type of lung cancer.

Your best bet is to be mindful of potential asbestos and other environmental toxins. If you live or work in an old building built before the 80s, have a professional check it. These buildings typically have asbestos and other toxins in their ceilings, flooring, and insulation. Moreover, if they find any toxins, ask them to be removed immediately. If it isn’t possible due to the condition of the building, we recommend looking for a new place to reside.

Going for regular check-ups is also crucial for the early detection of many diseases caused by these toxins. They can help diagnose any disease early on and start its treatment timely.

Stay Hydrated

Water is a necessary component of our bodies, accounting for around 60-80% of our body weight. It is essential for sustaining numerous bodily functions like homeostasis. Our bodies lose water constantly through several actions, such as sweat, urine, and breathing; hence, consuming enough water to maintain good health is critical.

Dehydration can also cause weariness, headaches, and a weakened immune system, making us more prone to infections and diseases. It can also cause dry and itchy skin, leading to infections and irritations.

As a result, it is advised to consume at least eight glasses of eight ounces of water daily, depending on your activity level and temperature. You can also incorporate herbal teas and fruit juices to address your hydration demands. Consuming foods high in water content, such as fruits and vegetables, can also help you stay hydrated.

Eat Healthily

A balanced diet is the most critical component of a healthy lifestyle. A healthy diet ensures that you go about day-to-day tasks effectively. It also ensures that your body gets all the necessary nutrients it needs.

So what does a balanced diet actually comprise? A balanced diet comprises all food groups, including proteins, vitamins and minerals, healthy fats, fibers, and carbohydrates. You must consume food items from these different food groups for optimal energy. Remember, you are what you eat!

A healthy diet also saves you from a large number of health problems. It acts as a shield against cardiac as well as respiratory problems. They also help your body against diabetes, gastronomical problems, and autoimmune disorders.

It is recommended to cut back on your consumption of foods that are high in sugar and salt content. High-sodium diets often cause hypertension and heart problems. Also, high-sugar diets often lead to diabetes and low energy levels after a sugar crash. Switch to healthier alternatives like water, unsweetened teas, smoothies, etc.

Sleep Well

A good night’s sleep will set you up for a successful and energized day. Sleep is necessary for a healthy lifestyle, and its importance cannot be stressed enough. Sleep deprivation can cause various health problems like insomnia, stress, weight gain, and even cause insulin resistance in diabetic patients.

Sleep also impacts your mood, motivation, and energy levels. Quality sleep will change your outlook on many things and even help you improve in many areas. It is recommended to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep at night.

If you struggle with sleep, you should observe a sleep pattern. Make a chart that lists how many hours of sleep you take each night, and then add factors contributing to your sleep and the lack of it. Then try to switch things up the next day and see how it impacts your sleep cycle. Keep doing it until you reach a sleep pattern that energizes you in the morning. Try creating a relaxing environment, minimizing screens, light, and noise, and establishing a bedtime regimen.

Nurture Social Relationships

Humans are social animals, and social ties are critical to their happiness. We need social interaction to feel we belong. We work on maintaining good connections with friends, family, and loved ones. This is part of nurturing our social interactions. Any social interaction can significantly impact your physical, mental, and emotional health.

Solid social ties also improve our immune system’s functionality, decrease stress, and improve mental well-being. These social relationships offer emotional support and help you cope with them in times of need. Other than this, social ties create groups of people who can exercise a sense of accountability. This improves health and well-being.

Spending quality time with loved ones, joining social groups or clubs, volunteering, or simply catching up with friends are all strategies to build and maintain social relationships.

A few months back I acquired a wooden standing desk from deskstand.com and I thought I would share my thoughts and experiences using the desk. I tried quite a variety of setups and positions with it, standing, sitting, sitting cross legged, you name it! I hope this is useful and helpful if you are thinking of getting some sort of standing desk.

standing desk

With the whole working from home thing, we tend to find that we are sitting way more than before. We don’t get up and get ready and make a commute to the office, instead we get out of bed and into our desk chair where we spend most of the day. While skipping the commute is not a bad thing at all, we may find that we are moving less or walking less because of it, especially if we do not make a conscious effort to move or to do some form of exercise or movement each day.

So a great way to help with our posture and movement is to opt for a standing desk. There are different types, some are conventional desks with electric motors that lifts the desk up or down with a push of a button. There are also adjustable desks such as the one in this article and video, made out of wood that can be adjusted to suit different heights.

Desk Stand Review" width="1067" height="606" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/deskstand2.jpg 1067w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/deskstand2-300x170.jpg 300w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/deskstand2-768x436.jpg 768w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/deskstand2-1024x582.jpg 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px" />

deskstand pros

Great way to convert your current desk setup into a standing desk.

Easy assembly and disassembly to switch between sitting and standing.

Multiple levels or heights.

Can be disassembled for easy storage when not in use.

Can be used in different positions, for standing and various sitting desk positions as well.

Certainly helps with movement and mobility by being able to switch between sitting and standing.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-20890" src="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/deskstand3.jpg" alt="STANDING Desk For A Healthier Work Life!

deskstand cons

While it is easy to assemble, I did find that I would become a little bit lazy to make the switch and do the assembly if I didn’t already have it on my desk.

It can be a bit bulky, so if you want to keep it on your desk constantly it does take up a lot of space.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-20892" src="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/deskstand5.jpg" alt="STANDING Desk For A Healthier Work Life!

Is a deskstand worth it?

The deskstand is certainly a versatile piece of office equipment, and I found a lot of different uses or positions to use it in, as you can see in the video. It is great if you don’t want to spend too much money on a standing desk and also to ascertain if you will stick to using a standing desk first before spending a lot of money on an electric standing desk for instance.

Update!

I managed to get a second hand electric standing desk, which is so much more convenient:

Struggling with an addiction can be draining. At some point, it feels like your essence and survival are tied to the availability of the substances of the addiction. In addition, the constant feeling of inadequacy, depression, and social anxiety that come with dependence is a lot to handle. Let alone the financial implications that come with keeping such a habit.

You realize that your physical health will plummet if you keep up this habit. The possibility of lung disease, cancer, and heart disease stare you in the face. You know it’s now or never. And so you intend to stop, to quit cold turkey.

Many believe the best way to ditch smoking is to go cold turkey. It is assumed that rather than a slow withdrawal, which could cause a relapse, an abrupt stop to substance use is the best method. People often arrive at this conclusion because the substance is already causing direct harm to their bodies. There’s also the assumption that you experience the withdrawal symptoms faster than a gradual withdrawal.

Going Cold Turkey

Going cold turkey means to halt the use of substances abruptly, largely through willpower. It is a quick-fix method often done with no external help or replacement medication. People who use this method try to avoid triggering situations and distract themselves with new activities. This process centers on developing new habits that take the mind off substance use.

Addiction to substances doesn’t happen overnight. It is the inability to stop a behavior or habit irrespective of the damage to the body. Addiction is a distortion of the brain functioning that alters reward and motivation. Opting to go cold turkey to stop a habit that has been built over the years has drawbacks and can potentially include some of the below.

Withdrawal Symptoms

People who abruptly stop drinking or smoking will very likely experience withdrawal symptoms. The severity of this withdrawal will depend on the extent of dependency. For smoking, common withdrawal symptoms include restlessness, difficulty sleeping, concentration issues, and nausea. The withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking aren’t life-threatening but can be destabilizing.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms, on the other hand, can be severe. It could be as bad for some as breathing and blood circulation issues. Others could experience seizures, cardiovascular dysfunction, and dehydration.

Moreover, the impact of alcohol and drugs is more terminal because the usage over time has tampered with the nervous system programming.

Psychological Withdrawal Symptoms

The psychological withdrawal symptoms are fatal and damaging. For example, for a person with alcohol dependency, quitting cold turkey increases the risk of delirium tremens. This psychotic condition includes hallucinations, seizures, and high blood pressure, among other symptoms. A person going cold turkey might also experience anxiety, depression, or difficulty sleeping.

This psychotic condition can occur after two days of withdrawal and last up to five days. Research shows that delirium tremens have a mortality rate of 8 percent. This is why quitting substance abuse suddenly is dangerous.

Giving up and Yielding Again

In 2018, 55 percent of the over 34 million people who smoke in the U.S. tried to quit. Unfortunately, only 8 percent were successful in about six months. People often try to give up this habit but end up reverting to old habits. This shows that willpower is not enough to stop an addiction.

Herein lies the danger of giving up and yielding again. When you quit for a while, your body loses tolerance to the limit it could take before. A relapse and return to the previous dosage can lead to overdose and be fatal. This is why anyone looking to quit substance use could benefit from a drug addiction intervention.

A drug addiction intervention is a structured meeting to help a person with addiction realize they need help. Avoiding a relapse in the company of others with similar experiences is easier. When your friends’ habit ‌threaten their wellbeing, it might be time to intervene and recommend a drug addiction intervention method.

Seek Professional Help

Trying to quit cold turkey could be very dangerous. The best bet to recover is to seek help. This includes joining support groups, counseling, behavioral therapy, and more. Professionals like psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors will ‌evaluate and prescribe the best recovery part based on the peculiar situation.

More often than not, a gradual withdrawal process is recommended to lessen its effects. For some people, surveillance would be required as it allows the medical personnel to monitor hydration, diet, and much more.

A stronger immune system confers several benefits, allowing you to fight off illnesses quicker and feel better on a regular basis. But how can you boost your immune system in a healthy and natural way?

The Immune System: an Overview

In case you aren’t familiar, your immune system is a complex bodily system designed to help your body detect foreign invaders (like bacteria, viruses, and parasites) and remove them before they cause you harm. If your immune system does its job well, you can fight off most illnesses before they begin to affect you. Boosting the immune system, then, should give your immune system more resources and more power with which to defend your body.

In reality, this is an oversimplification. The immune system relies on a great number of different cells and different response patterns, so describing it as a single entity rarely provides an accurate picture of what’s happening in your body. On top of that, “boosting” immune cells isn’t always a good thing; in fact, overly active immune cells can result in a multitude of other health problems.

That said, there are some simple habits you can use to make sure your immune system has everything it needs to function appropriately and keep you safe.

How to Strengthen Your Immune System

These are some of the best ways to support your immune system:

Use an immune system boosting supplement

First, consider using a natural immune system boosting product like Biocidin LSF. Biocidin LSF contains a mixture of different botanical compounds that support detoxification in the body and help balance your internal microbial environment. Other supplements, like echinacea, are also purported to provide immune-boosting benefits. Always do your research and talk to your doctor before taking any supplements for your health though.

Avoid smoking and drinking

As much as possible, avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. Excessive consumption of these substances can weaken your immune system and put you at risk of other health conditions, like heart disease and diabetes. You should work on quitting smoking as soon as possible, abandoning the habit entirely. As for drinking alcohol, you should limit it to occasional drinks and limited volume consumption.

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables

Try to eat a wide variety of different fruits and vegetables. To function properly, your immune system depends on a variety of different nutrients, including vitamins C and E. While it’s possible to supplement these vitamins and other nutrients your body needs, you shouldn’t have to worry about supplementations as long as you’re fitting enough fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. While you’re at it, cut down on junk food – it may not hurt your immune system directly, but less junk food is always a good thing for your health.

Move daily

Get some physical exercise every day, even if you’re just going for a brisk walk. The stimulation is good for your muscles and for your blood flow, and leads to a variety of different health benefits.

If your body is physically fit, and you’re able to maintain a healthy weight, you’ll have a much easier time fighting off infections.

Get plenty of sleep

If you don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis, your immune system could suffer the consequences. Lack of sleep is highly correlated with acquiring infectious illnesses. As long as you’re getting the recommended 7 to 9 hours every night, you’ll be in good shape to fight off the worst diseases. If you’re having trouble getting that amount of sleep, consider reprioritizing certain things in your life, reducing your caffeine intake, and avoiding digital screens right before bed.

Avoid infections

Exposure to microbes can help your immune system develop better defenses against similar microbes, but being exposed to a serious illness is going to put excessive strain on your immune system. Keep yourself safe by following better food preparation guidelines, washing your hands regularly, and keeping your distance from other people who are known to be sick.

Reduce stress

Did you know that stress can also weaken your immune system? If you’re chronically or excessively stressed, you could face a higher risk of getting sick. Make sure to reduce the stress in your life however you can, such as by reducing the number of hours you work or by finding stress management strategies.

Hopefully, your immune system is already doing a pretty good job of protecting you. If you follow these basic habits and strategies, and continue pursuing a healthy lifestyle overall, your immune system can become even stronger!

Apart from keeping you well rested, it provides plenty of benefits—such as reducing inflammation and lowering your risk of heart disease—that’ll allow you to stay healthy. A good night’s sleep may help address issues such as lack of focus and decreased productivity throughout the day.

Different people sleep in different ways. While some can just close their eyes and drift off to sleep without a problem, others have difficulty falling and staying asleep, especially when they’re right beside a heavy snorer.

What Is Snoring?

Snoring is a condition in which a person releases a loud breathing noise while they’re sleeping. While the sound produced may seem harmless in itself, snoring can be a sign of health complications you should be aware of.

Health Issues Associated With Snoring

It’s important to know the health risks of snoring so you can figure out how to address the root cause and eventually stop snoring altogether. It’s true that snoring once in a while shouldn’t be a cause of worry, particularly if you’ve had a long, exhausting day. But if you’re a chronic snorer and there has never been a night when you were able to sleep quietly, you might be dealing with an underlying condition you’re not yet aware of.

Some health risks related to snoring are the following:

Stroke

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Heart Disease

Mental Health Issues

Nocturia

Obesity

Sleep Apnea

Arrhythmias

To alleviate snoring, you may want to consult with a doctor who can diagnose if a particular health problem is causing you to snore. They can ask you to undergo polysomnography, also referred to as a sleep study. In this test, you’ll sleep either in your home or their laboratory, and a device will be attached to your body to help them monitor your breathing, heart rate, and brain activity.

Alternatively, the doctor can conduct an imaging test that’ll allow them to determine if there’s an obstacle that should be cleared from your airways.

How To Reduce Or Eliminate Snoring

Sleeping next to a chronic snorer is never a treat, especially if the other person is a light sleeper. Even if you sleep alone, if you’re aware that you snore loudly and excessively, you should look into and take measures to put a stop to the issue so you can sleep peacefully every night.

Here are several ways on how you can sleep better at night and minimize your snoring:

Sleep On Your Side

One of the top reasons people snore is that their airways are blocked, usually by their tongue, making it difficult for the air inside their body to get out. If you’re a back sleeper, your tongue may be lying at the back of your throat and obstructing your airway. Because there’s no clear path for air, you end up snoring.

To prevent that situation, you may want to consider sleeping on your side so your tongue rests on the side of your mouth. In this way, you can eliminate the possibility of it blocking your air passages.

Before you start sleeping on your side more often, you may want to switch to side sleeper-friendly pillows. These allow for proper body alignment, enabling you to wake up without any body or neck pains.

Elevate Your Pillows

If you’re uncomfortable sleeping on your side, you can choose to elevate your pillows instead. Doing this prevents your tongue from being pushed back and becoming an obstacle. When raising your pillows, you shouldn’t forget to give adequate support to your neck and shoulders as an improper sleeping position can also cause blockage of the airways.

To allow yourself to sleep on your back without worrying about the angle of your body, you can opt to purchase a wedge pillow, which has an inclined angle. This will allow your upper body to be in the perfect position for sleeping.

Lose Weight

If you’re overweight or obese, you might want to think about trying to lose weight. When you have extra tissue, especially in your throat, this may be getting in the way of your air passages and contributing to your snoring problem. The excess tissue can squeeze the diameter of your throat, hindering the air in your body from being released. With that, you may find yourself snoring every time you sleep, be it in the afternoon or at night, which could lead to a more significant health problem in the long run.

Even if you’re not overweight or obese but you’ve realized that you started snoring when you gained weight, losing a few pounds can help solve the issue.

Wear A Mouthpiece

One way to ensure that your tongue will stay in place when you sleep regardless of the position you end up in, is wearing a mouthpiece intended to help people who snore. With this kind of mouthpiece, all you have to do is wear it before hitting the hay and go to sleep as usual.

Ideally, you should look for a mouthpiece with an anti-snoring feature so you can ensure that it’ll serve its purpose well. While it’s generally acceptable to go for a standard size when choosing a mouthpiece, you might want to search for one that allows for custom fitting. This way, it won’t be too loose or too constricting, and you’ll be comfortable throughout the night.

Conclusion on snoring

There’s nothing wrong with snoring occasionally. But if you snore heavily every time you take a nap or go to sleep at night, it’s advisable to look for ways to stop it from happening. Not only will the people around you be able to sleep without disturbances, but you can also reduce your chances of developing more serious health problems.

Ideally, you should first find out why you’re snoring so you can determine the appropriate steps you have to take. You can always start with the tips above and see if any of them works for you. However, it’s best to visit your doctor for a proper diagnosis, expert advice, and treatment.

When it comes to taking care of ourselves, staying fit is right there at the top of the list, and many times it really is easier said than done. Many of us have been waiting patiently for gyms to open and are praying that they will stay open in the coming months. One of the best ways we can all collectively act to ensure that this is the case is to be aware of the gym’s cleanliness and strive to clean up after ourselves. Here’s how you can tell if your gym is being cleaned regularly to ensure your safety.

Trust Your Nose

This is one of the golden rules of life, and doesn’t just apply here! Your sense of smell should never be underestimated – if something smells off, it probably is off – because millions of years of evolution have allowed us to spot dangerous and life-threatening smells. Most smells are produced by organic compounds, which are in turn, produced by various living organisms, and sometimes are the living organisms themselves; when you smell mold, you’re also breathing it in. This might sound nasty, but if all you can smell is cleaning products and disinfectants in the air, the gym staff are probably doing their job and keeping the potentially harmful microorganisms away from your respiratory tracts.

Watch the Showers

Any areas that are constantly getting wet are the best places for life to start to thrive. If there’s only one thing you check, make sure its the showers, and the floors if your gym has a pool that you also use. Any weird colors that shouldn’t be there? There might be cause for alarm. If a shower is cleaned and disinfected regularly, even if it stays damp all the time, nothing should be growing on it. If any life form is living it’s best life to the extent that it is visible to your naked eye, someone has been sloppy for a long time. It’s also worthy to note that you can avoid showering at the gym overall, which is advisable under current conditions, but these signs can also be spotted in bathrooms as well as other areas that are wet or even just damp.

Ask the Staff

It really helps to go to a gym where you can be part of the same community as the people who work and train there. But whether or not you know the people at the gym, it pays to ask about the gym cleaning schedule. In the UAE, where gyms have been open since July, Gymnation has launched ‘‘Gym Near Me’, which is a service that helps you locate the closest gym to your home and community. It’s always good to know how clean a place is from the people who work there, so don’t hesitate to ask them how often they clean it.

Observe the Staff

If you don’t see anyone cleaning (there probably should be someone cleaning all the time seeing as how we’re still struggling to find an effective cure for the coronavirus), then you might want to be a little suspicious.

Of course, you also have to do your part and sanitize the equipment you touch before and after use, but that should go without saying. Check out the other people in the gym too, and if you think someone didn’t properly clean and disinfect a machine after they used it, then make sure you give it a wipe-down before you use it.

Staying alert and informed is really the best thing you can do to make sure that your gym is both clean and safe. This is how you can not only watch out for yourself, but also for others. As important as it is to watch out for signs that indicate space has not been properly cleaned, you should not freak out or freak anyone else out. These days, almost everyone is stressed out, and for more than one valid reason.

Instead, try to be proactive and encourage the staff to adhere to the recommended cleaning standards. Remember, these are trying times for us all and with the massive amount of false information out there it is important to make sure that we seek knowledge from reliable sources, and not blame each other for our confusion. Stay safe!

When it comes to summer, everyone wants a beach-ready body, but it’s not enough to just look good, you want to feel good too, as that’s the most important thing. Achieving that summer-ready body and feeling confident and energized is simple if you know where to start, and that means picking the right nutrition to get the results you need.

Ditch the Alcohol and High sugar drinks

It might seem hard during the summer months to outright ditch the alcohol, but this is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to unnecessary weight gain. Sitting out in the sun with a cold drink in your hands sounds great until you start putting on fat. Indeed, cold beer can be a good way to beat the heat, but it can lead to a beer belly that’ll be hard to shake off!

If you still want to enjoy some cold beverages, try looking for lower calorie versions at least. Alternatively, if you still find it hard to cut down, perhaps give sparkling waters a try as they have a bit of flavour with a lot less of the calories and sugar.

Stick With Plant-Based Foods

While plant-based food may not be everyone’s cup of tea, there are definitely some benefits that come with it. Plant-based foods can be delicious, nutritious and will leave you with energy to spare rather than holding you back from summer activities. Try cauliflower-based foods like pizzas or wings, vegetable burgers, and a wide assortment of alternatives to your favorite foods.

Pick a Diet Plan

If you find it difficult to stay motivated or stick to your goals, then following a diet plan could be a good option. Not only does this help you avoid the mess of figuring out all the information yourself, but it also provides you with some excellent food options to choose from. There are plenty of plans out there and a popular diet plan might be exactly what you need, to at least get started and figure out what works for you. As long as you remain consistent, following a diet offers proven results.

Rearrange Your Eating Habits

Eating a better diet is one thing, but your eating habits can also help your summer goals become more attainable. For instance, while eating three big meals a day works for most people, spacing out meals into smaller portions, such as up to 5 or 6 smaller meals a day, has been shown to help produce less stress on the gastrointestinal system.

It is also a smart idea to turn meals into smaller snacks throughout the day to keep your energy levels up, as this works better for some people.

This is a good way to start meal prepping too. Set aside some time to cut up vegetables, fruits, mix in some protein-rich foods like nuts, and divide big portions of meals into easily digestible snacks for the day/week.

Find something Fun

Find something fun, that is active and that you enjoy doing, and then go and do it! That way you can get some exercise and keep fit doing something that you want to do and keeps you coming back for more. Whether it is just a walk by the beach, or a game of tennis, as long as it gets you to move about and gets you excited, that’s what matters.

Remember Your Vitamins and minerals

While you should be getting the bulk of your daily vitamin needs through dietary consumption, you could also consider supplementing the rest that you miss out on with simple vitamin pills or vitamin B shots, but speak to a qualified Doctor to know exactly what you need. But before supplementing, remember to try include a piece of fruit or vegetables into your diet daily. Vitamin D is not as much of an issue during the summer due to better sun exposure, but things like calcium, iron, vitamin B (and B3), omega-3 and 6, magnesium, and even glutamine can be added to help support your body’s functions to get the most out of your summer.

Summer is a time of enjoyment. After all, there’s nothing like being outside, smelling the fresh air, and enjoying the beach. What you don’t want to do is feel sluggish and uneasy, thus missing out on enjoying summer to its fullest. By following these tips, you’ll see how important your diet and food habits are to reaching your goals.

Physical Fitness is so important and everyone is always looking for new workouts and exercise ideas to help them stay in shape. There are so many different sports and activities that you can try and that will have some great benefits on your physical health as well as your mental and emotional well being. It is really important to understand the advantages of regular exercise so that you can choose the right workout program for you.

In this article, we will look at 6 notable reasons why you should stay fit so that you can motivate yourself to exercise regularly.

1. Increase your Life Expectancy

Numerous studies have shown that maintaining physical fitness reduces the risk of premature mortality and increases life expectancy. Research also revealed that people can increase their life expectancy with more exercises regardless of how active they were in the past. By being more active, you can lower your blood pressure, improve your blood circulation and prevent losses in bone thickness which are directly linked to osteoporosis.

2. Lower Your Risk of Injury

With regular exercise, you can prevent injury by increasing muscle strength, bone density, stability and flexibility. Moreover, physical fitness can make you become more resilient when facing accidents.

For instance, strong muscles and good balance mean that you lower your risk of slipping or falling. Performing strength training workouts can increase or maintain your muscle mass. There is so much workout equipment that you can use to build muscle and these versatile machines, for example, are designed to target every part of the body.

It is really important to strengthen each muscle in your body so that all your joints and body structures are balanced and work in harmony. Frequent exercise can help kids and teens build stronger bones whilst slowing down the loss of bone density that is typically associated with elderly people.

3. Fewer Doctor and Hospital Visits

Research has shown that improving strength and flexibility can ease chronic pain in the long-term as endorphins, which are your body’s natural painkiller, can be released during exercise. Some simple exercises like walking, swimming, rowing, biking and yoga can help with chronic pain and ensure that your joints and bones stay healthy.

An inactive lifestyle can take a huge toll on your body. Many studies have shown that physical inactivity is linked with an increased risk of cancer, chronic diseases and mental health issues. Physical activity also improves your cardiovascular health, respiratory and overall health. Furthermore, staying active and maintaining a healthy body weight reduces your risk for type 2 diabetes, stroke and certain types of cancer. For instance, a study in 2007 found that exercising can prevent breast cancer as high levels of estrogen, which is stored in fat, increase cancer risk.

4. Decrease your Stress Levels, Anxiety and Depression

There is a direct link between your level of activity and your mood. Research has shown that exercising increases serotonin levels, which helps regulate mood, appetite and sleep. Many people find that after a fast-paced game of tennis or a few laps in the pool, they tend to focus more on the internal energy of their body rather than on the stresses or anxiety in their minds.

Exercise also helps to raise the level of endorphins in our bodies, which are natural mood lifters. Moreover, exercise aids neuron growth, and reduces chemicals that are associated with depression.

5. Improve your Sleep Quality

According to the National Sleep Foundation, regular exercise in the morning or afternoon can improve your sleep quality by raising your body temperature. Recent research suggests that exercise reduces insomnia and the effects of aerobic exercise on sleep seem to be equivalent to taking sleeping pills.

Moreover, by getting better sleep quality at night, you can be more alert during the daytime.

6. Boost your Self Confidence

An active lifestyle can help to give you a new positive outlook because you will feel strong and look good, which will create a better self image. A positive mindset helps to fortify your perception of your own self-worth as well as help you to handle stressful situations better. As staying fit and working out help release endorphins, you will also have a higher level of the positive chemicals that are necessary for being cheerful and optimistic.
