The Surface Pro 8 has been out for some time now, with the Surface Pro 9 recently being unveiled. I managed to pick up a Surface Pro 8 but I was still not 100% sure that it would be able to do the things that I wanted to do.

So I decided to make a video showing some of the things that I use it for, such as:

360 video editing

Video editing (Da Vinci Resolve, FHD and 4k)

Coding (VS code and visual studio)

General stuff (meetings, youtube, blogging)

Hopefully this can help show you what it can do and whether it will meet your needs. Feel free to comment and ask any questions on it and I will do my best to help you out where I can. If you are also looking for accessories for your Surface Pro, there are many cheaper alternatives available that work well.

Quality:

The build quality of the earphones is great. I was expecting them to look and feel quite ‘plastic’ like, but they are quite sturdy and strong.

The sound quality is also awesome and blocks out quite a bit of the surrounding ambient sounds. The bass is also quite deep for these type of earphones.

Overall I was quite impressed with their quality.

Pros and features:

All controls are on the right earphone. You can switch them on and off, increase/decrease the volume and skip songs all from there. I prefer the controls on the earphone like this rather than the others where the controls are built onto the cord.

A primary reason why I bought these, with the ear clips, was to ensure they don’t fall out while training. During some of the calisthenic holds I am upside down, or jumping around doing box jumps. I am pleased to say not once did they fall out, so they do stay in all the time.

The battery life is incredible. They last me over a week of training almost everyday for about an hour or so. The charge time is quite quick as well, about two hours.

Cost:

In South Africa, these are available on Amazon. I think they can be bought from selected shops around the country but the price is much more than on Amazon, even with the delivery. Amazon delivery is quite efficient, and I have never had any issues with it. It usually takes about two weeks to get here and you can track it all the way.

They cost +- USD 20, plus +- USD 12 for delivery and import taxes.

Cons:

The only aspect of these earphones that I have a small issue with, is that your ears do start to hurt after using them for some time (just over an hour), but I think that will be the case with pretty much any style of these in ear, earphones.

I think you can gather that overall I am very happy with them, and I would certainly recommend them, especially for their price they tick all the boxes.

I have also reviewed their skin shoes some time ago. In my experience their service has always been incredible and prompt. They have many different shoes for both men and women, so if you’re looking for a great Christmas present for someone, it could be a great place to start :p

Pros and about the shoe:

The sneakers are really comfortable, they fit well and are quite the lookers. The stylish colours make them stand out just enough.

They come in a few other colours such as black, mint, peach and grey.

They remind you to recycle the box it comes in.

Only BPA-FREE materials are used to be free from environmental hormones.

The sneakers are really comfortable and lightweight and have no laces (woohoo!). I am not a fan of laces and prefer slip on shoes way more. If shoes do come with conventional laces, I usually change them to the ‘lock laces‘ which are so much more convenient.

They are well designed with a comfortable and cooling mesh exterior that makes them breathable.

To note:

These sneakers are designed primarily for walking and mostly casual wear, so for basic gym use and some jogging they are fine, but I wouldn’t advise them being used for specific sports such as say soccer or tennis or squash, where you are running and stopping with quick changes in direction. Rather get more specific shoes/trainers that will hold up for that if that’s what you want, especially for regular use. For more durable active shoes, you can try out the Ballop V2 Skin-Fit.

Con:

The only sort of down fall that I found of these would be the high sole. They have a somewhat traditional sneaker under sole that starts higher at the back and tapers off towards the front of the sneaker. I myself prefer flatter shoes like the Nike free run 5.0, so these are bit high at the back for me which I’m not a fan of, and I tend to initially feel that ‘highness’ as I walk in them. Although, this really boils down to personal preference.

I have always been a lover of dark chocolate and really prefer the less sweet and more cocoa tasting chocolate. The problem, is finding really good quality and great tasting dark chocolate. Thus I thought I would review and provide a short write up on any dark chocolate I try out. Hopefully it can provide other dark chocolate lovers with a good description of the various brands and maybe even show you some great quality brands that you have never heard about, that you could end up trying and loving!

The second dark chocolate review is of the Chocolates by Tomes (CbT). After reviewing the Lindt 70% dark chocolate I didn’t think another brand would come quite close, but the CbT is just as good if not better than the Lindt chocolate in a few aspects. It’s balance of ‘darkness’ and sweetness is pretty darn amazing as is the texture of it. A plus is that is is also made right here in South Africa. CbT also lists the cocoa solids as 72%, which hopefully shows that it really contains that amount.

The review is quite basic and to the point, being based upon four aspects:

The ingredients

The taste

The texture

The sweetness

Flavours

Ingredients:

Cocoa solids: 72%

The great thing about Chocolate by Tomes is that they also list the percentages. Some brands simply call it dark chocolate, and then on the ingredients list, list the cocoa solids percentage as somewhere between 30 and 50%. 30% is really low and doesn’t quite count as dark chocolate. Obviously the higher the percentage the darker it is.

What’s also great is that even on the non dark chocolates of CbT, they list the cocoa solids percentage. For example one of the white chocolate flavours is listed as 42%.

Texture:

Some dark chocolate is too soft and melts a bit too easily in your mouth and thus doesn’t really last. This usually happens when there is not enough cocoa solids and the chocolate may not have been tempered well. I like it when it lasts a bit and has a bit of thickness to it, allowing the intensity of the dark chocolate taste to really engulf your taste buds without leaving a lingering aftertaste. The CbT bars do this well.

Taste:

The chocolate is of a high quality and the taste is exquisite, definitely one of the best out there. It also has a great balance between sweetness and ‘darkness’ to make it not too sweet and not too bitter. If you have a slight inclination to dark chocolate but are still a bit hesitant because of the bitterness, it is definitely worth a try. I found though, that these chocolates are slightly more bitter (bitter meaning dark and not sweet) than the Lindt bar (which is 70%).

Dark chocolate sweetness rating: 1 -5

4 out of 5.

The higher the rating is, the less sweet and more dark chocolaty taste it has.

Flavours:

Chocolate by Tomes has a range of different flavours for their chocolates.

The flavours I tried were (in order of greatness):

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE (also 72%)

MINT in 72% dark chocolate

ORANGE in 72% dark chocolate

They were all really great tasting and the flavours were nice and subtle which didn’t distract from the great dark chocolate taste. I have experienced other chocolates that add flavours, sometimes add too much and thus overpower the chocolate making it quite sweet and in turn eliminating the ‘dark’ taste.

I recently had the opportunity to try out three of Bobble’s products. The Bobble Sport, a stylish self-filtered water bottle for the athlete in all of us, the Bobble Brush and the Bobble Ice Tray.

They catch the eye in an instant with their bright colours and their stylish designs, but do they work? Do they deliver what they promise to? What separates their on the go bottle products from the rest is that their bottles incorporate a filter which filters the water as you drink it. Another aspect is their genius designs and the fact that their products are all BPA free.

“BPA, short for bisphenol A, is a hormone-disrupting, reproductive and developmental toxin that has also permeated the environment so much so that a government study found detectable levels of it in 93 percent of several thousand people tested over the age of six. BPA can cause adverse effects at very low levels, and is a particular concern for infants and children.” [1]

One thing which I do like about Bobble is their concern with the environment, recycling and people’s health, as well as the fact that they do give back and support people who need it. You can read more about them on their website. (Links follow below.)

OK so let’s have a look at each product.

The Bobble Sport Self-Filtered Water Bottle

It is available in two vibrant colours, blue and magenta.

Bobble sport incorporates the same patented built-in, replaceable carbon filter found in the original bobble (500 ml and 1 L). The filter removes chlorine and organic contaminants found in everyday tap water, yielding a cleaner, crisper taste. Each filter equates to 300 single-serve water bottles, making bobble an environmentally- and budget-friendly choice.

Bobble sport is recyclable, free of BPA, Phthalates and PVC. It is made in the USA. The bottle and carry cap are top-rack dishwasher-safe, which was a particular requirement for gym-goers and other regular bobble users.

Pros:

The design of the bottle is pretty good, and easy to hold. It has a sleek design and won’t slip out of your grip which is good if you are training.

It is 750 ml, which is awesome. Most sports bottles which are 750 ml seem to be quite chunky where as this one is really light and compact. I find 500 ml bottles not enough, especially for someone who drinks a lot of water, 750 ml is ideal I think.

They claim that the filter removes chlorine and organic contaminants found in everyday tap water, yielding a cleaner, crisper taste. I can taste a slight difference in the water, slight enough to notice so I’m sure the filter is doing its job. To what degree though I cannot really say.

A plus with all their products is that they are BPA free and recyclable.

Cons:

I find that to get the water out you have to squeeze the bottle slightly hard. But it is expected with a filter. But after a few sips you do get used to it, so it’s not such a big deal.

The filter has to be replaced after some time unfortunately. After 300 bottles of water to be precise. So if we do the calculation, if I’m drinking 2 of those bottles of water a day, in 5 months I will need a new filter, which is not too bad. The downside is the filter costs almost as much as a new bottle.

The Bobble Brush

It is available in two colours, blue and magenta.

Brush bristles are cleverly crafted from a static material that grabs and pulls dirt from surfaces. Bobble’s brush has been designed to fit into and around bobbles curves. Its long stem allows it to clean the interior of every sized bobble.

Pros:

Genius design and idea. The bristles are very durable and make cleaning the insides of the Bobble water bottle, or any other water bottle for that matter, a breeze.

Cons:

The only thing which it needs I would say is a cover for the bristles (much like the bottle has a cover), since you will be using this brush to clean your bottle, you do want the brush itself to to be kept clean and isolated while it is stored in a drawer or cupboard.

Bobble brush is available at @home, Due South and Wellness Warehouse stores nationwide.

The Bobble Ice Tray

It is available in two colour combinations: red and blue/ magenta and blue.

Remove ice with ease – just push up under the flexible, soft forms and the ice pops out.

The colourful, food grade, BPA-free plastic tray is dishwasher safe and features a built-in reservoir to help prevent spills. Ice trays are stackable for freezing too.

Pros:

It’s perfect design makes it easy for storing and stacking in the freezer.

Because each ice mold is made out of some sort of rubber and is flexible, taking out the ice cubes is so easy and no ice cubes crack, for example like when you have to twist the old fashioned ice trays.

The ice cubes fit perfectly into the Bobble water bottle as well as many other water bottles.

It is very easy to clean.

Cons:

None, Great product!

About Bobble

Founded in 2009 in New York City, Move Collective, LLC develops intelligent, functional patents with emotive design. Move Collective partnered with design icon Karim Rashid to create bobble, a sleek ecological alternative to single-serve plastic water bottles that features a replaceable, recyclable carbon filter designed to transform municipal tap water. After pioneering an entirely new category with bobble, Move Collective then reinvented home filtration systems with their bobble jug. The bobble jug was also designed by Karim Rashid.

With bobble hot and bobble iced, Move Collective, in tandem with Karim Rashid, reinvented yet another category. Bobble products have been ecstatically received by consumers and press alike and are now available in more than 30 countries. Having been awarded multiple prestigious industry awards, recently the Edison Awards in 2011/2012 and the Best in Biz Awards in 2012, Move Collective has been cited as one of the 100 most innovative companies in America, and its founders are recent finalists for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and Crain’s Fast Fifty. Bobble products are available in more than 40,000 retailers globally. In June 2013, Move Collective, LLC, and its signature product, bobble, were acquired by Seventh Generation, a 25-year pioneer in the sustainability arena and one of the nation’s leading green brands.
