It is no surprise that drinking water is often the most chosen option to hydrate the body. No doubt, it is also the cheapest option and the only option among other beverages that contain no added sugars or calories. Therefore, most people choose it as the ideal drink to have throughout the day or when rehydration is needed. However, it has come to light that in order to rehydrate quickly, water might not be the only option suggested by health experts. Also, technically, it is not even the fastest way to rehydrate the body in cases of acute dehydration.

So, before you read about the fastest way to hydrate a dehydrated body, consider the most common options to rehydrate yourself daily.

Plant based milks

You probably know that oat or soya milk amongst the various plant based milks, supplies a host of nutrients to the body. Their hydrating capabilities are surprising though. For those who don’t know, these milks can have high levels of electrolytes. They can be used after an intense workout in a smoothie or protein shake, and besides hydrating the body, they also contain protein and other nutrients.

Juicy Fruits and Veggies

Juicy fruits and vegetables contain around 80 to 99% fluid. For easy understanding, highly processed food items like cookies, crackers, cereals, chips, etc., contain only 1 to 9% of fluid content. Therefore, eating plant-based foods with the most water content, like berries, melons, oranges, grapes, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, etc., is a good way to rehydrate without actually drinking water. Eating these with snacks or other food items daily will help to keep the body hydrated.

Oral Hydration Drinks/Solutions

Oral hydration solutions are by far the most advised rehydration technique by doctors. These are great options to prevent and treat dehydration issues caused by diarrhea, frequent vomiting, workout recovery, hangover recovery, etc. Oral hydration solutions contain electrolytes like Sodium, Chloride, and Potassium, apart from sugar compounds like Dextrose. Some of these solutions also contain prebiotics and zinc.

Intravenous (IV) Therapy

IV Therapy is one of the fastest methods to rehydrate those suffering from acute dehydration symptoms. It is a medical technique of intravenous fluid replacement. In this process, electrolyte-balanced fluids are directly administered into the patient’s bloodstream. Therefore, the blood cells instantly distribute the fluid throughout the body. A recent trend of IV drips at home has made people choose this option whenever needed. All that is needed to be done is taking appointments with mobile-healthcare professionals and get hydrated fast.

Wrapping Up

If you have read this far, you now know that to rehydrate quickly, there are many more options than drinking good old H2O. For people who do not enjoy the conventional water drinking, the above ways, such as eating more fruit and vegetables that contain water, are all great ways to up your water intake and to keep your hydration in check!

With the severe drought and water crisis in Cape Town, we should all become aware about preserving precious worldly resources such as water. When you actually think about it and monitor these sort of things daily, which we use and take for granted, only then do you realize just how much we use and waste unnecessarily. It really puts things into perspective.

The great news is that if we all do our part and become more conscious about certain things, we can make sure we use only what we really need to and reduce our wastage.

Just remember to be conscious every time you open a tap!

Here’s a few basic tips that you can start to implement in your daily routine.

Simple water saving tips:

Don’t leave taps running when doing other things, such as brushing your teeth, washing dishes etc.

Be conscious when washing your hands, and again don’t leave the tap running.

Flush toilets only when very necessary. (One flush uses around +-10 Liters of water)

Half Fill the sink with water and wash dishes in it rather than keeping the tap running while washing.

Use water saving cycles on washing machines.

Keep water (grey water) from washing machines to use for toilets etc.

If you can, purchase drinking water from shops (or specific points).

Try check how much water you actually use.

While Showering:

Keep a bucket in the shower to collect water. You can use that water for toilets etc.

Open the water, once wet switch off the shower. Lather up, and then open the water again to rinse.

Have a sponge bath every now and again.

Water forms an essential part of the human body. It is quite important to keep the body well-hydrated to carry out bodily functions efficiently. Water plays a vital role in all body functions and the benefits of plain drinking water are plenty, however health enthusiasts have now given a new taste to water while enhancing its properties, and this newly developed water formula is popularly known as “Infused Water”.

You can have your own refreshing blend of infused water to pamper your taste buds and enhance your health with various easy to follow infusion ideas. All you need is cold water and a fresh produce to add flavor and health benefits without adding any calories to it.

What is infused water?

Infused water is the same zero calorie water with a bit of tasty twist. Herbs, fruits, spices, vegetables, or even edible flowers are added to plain water to infuse the rich flavor into it. It is really a boon for those who find plain water boring and are struggling to keep their body hydrated.

This water is neither soup nor juice, but still it is one of the best health remedies to avail health and weight loss benefits. This water would be a great drink to carry along to quench your thirst while enjoying your favorite flavor.

How to prepare infused water?

There are no fixed ingredients to prepare infused water except water! You can blend in anything that has flavor and is edible. Some of the suggestions for infusion are:

Vegetables like carrot, celery, fennel, and cucumber that offer freshness to the water.

Berries and melon to give a cooling effect to the drink.

Other refreshing fruits like apples, citrus fruits, and tropical fruits. Juicy fruits are recommended.

Herbs loaded with vitamins like cilantro, mint, basil, rosemary, thyme, and parsley. Avoid herbs with intense flavor and taste.

Many edible flowers have refreshing taste and various health benefits. These wonders of nature include hibiscus, lavender, rose, violets, and citrus blossoms. Make sure that you are using only the flowers grown without pesticides to avoid side effects.

Spices can also be used to add flavor to the water. Some spices that you may try are cloves, vanilla bean, cardamom, cinnamon, and even ginger. Go easy on the quantity if you don’t want the water to taste too spicy.

Based on the above suggestions, you can select anything that suits your taste buds. Infused water can be prepared in an infusion bottle to make your personal blend. You can also use a big glass jug to make a big batch of infused water.

A few Tips:

Take your favorite fruit, spice, vegetable, flower, or herb and wash it properly to remove any visible impurity.

Don’t use over ripe fruits or stale herbs for infusion.

Pour cold water in the bottle or pitcher, add small cubes or slices of the ingredient you are using for infusion to ensure quicker infusion.

Small sized pieces will infuse the flavor faster.

If using a citrus blend then flavor would blend faster, while spices would take longer for infusion.

Let the infused water stand for an hour or so before consuming it.

You can refill it with fresh water during the day until the flavor wears off.

Health benefits of infused water:

Refreshes your body.

Aids weight loss by keeping you full for longer.

Keeps you hydrated.

Improves blood circulation.

Enhances your activity level by keeping your body and mind agile.

Fights stress and uplifts your mood.

Keeps you cool in scorching heat.

Aids digestion.

Infused water offers the benefit of water along with a taste that you would love to relish. Make your own blend with little creativity to make a new infusion every time. Try combinations like lemon-mint-ginger, orange-cilantro, cucumber-mint, berries-lemon, apple-cilantro, rosemary-apple, apple-cinnamon, and so on. Go wild with your creativity and you will find a new infusion every time. Combine flowers and fruits, vegetables and spice, herbs and fruits, and many such combinations to rejuvenate your senses.

In this day and age, everyone is looking for a quick and convenient way to do things. Unfortunately there is no secret weapon you can pull out to become super muscly and lean, if there was, i’m pretty sure everyone would be using it to look good. So with that being said, here are a few pointers to get you started to building some good quality muscle and achieving that ideal physique which you want.

Remember there are no short cuts, no magic pills, no wonder supplements!

1. Start weight training to build and maintain muscle.

If you don’t use your muscles you’ll lose them. It’s that simple.

The body is an amazing thing, and it has an incredible ‘survival mode’ in which it will eventually shed what it doesn’t need, to survive. So in order to build muscles you need to continuously train them and challenge them, and go beyond what you’ve done before. You can do this by ensuring each time you train you are progressing by becoming stronger each time; therefore, ensure you are constantly increasing the weights you use.

2. Eat more protein.

Simply put, protein builds muscle. Be sure to have some protein in each of your meals. This will also ensure that you feel fuller for longer and will play a role in keeping your energy levels (more) constant. Your body does not store protein to use at a later stage like it does with carbohydrates for energy, so you need to make sure you constantly ingest some protein at each meal throughout the day in order to constantly supply your body with the amino acids it needs to repair and build your muscles.

3. Eat more calories.

Many times people start out in the gym and train and train AND train! But then they complain that they are training so hard but are not gaining anything. My first response is EAT! You have to eat a lot of the right foods in order to pick up good quality muscle size. I mean that muscle has to be built out of something right?

Now don’t go overboard and eat anything and everything in sight. You need to start somewhere and then build it up slowly over a time period, increasing your calories, for example each week, or as you progress in size.

Remember the bigger you become (or better yet, the more muscle you gain), the more food you will need to maintain that muscle and even more so to support new muscle growth.

So you need to really focus on your diet, and be sure to reassess it on a regular basis.

4. Be Sure to rest enough.

When you weight train, you are basically tearing down your muscles, in order for your body to rebuild them (and rebuild them a tiny bit bigger each time). So you do need to rest enough to allow proper recuperation and recovery of all your muscles. Make sure to at least take one day off from the gym in a week to aid in recovery, and try to do your best to get a good nights sleep each night. I’m not going to state that you need exactly 8 hours of sleep every night, since I’ve seen many people do it on less. Just see what works for you, but don’t skimp on sleep if you can!

5. Be Consistent

When it comes to building a lean and mean physique you have to be consistent with your training, eating, and resting. Now I don’t mean consistency in the sense that you have to do the same thing over and over, not quite. You should be consistent with all three aspects, but always continue to analyze them and keep them changing and progressing as you adapt. What I mean is, you need to take it all seriously and get it done, day in and day out. Not every second day or every second week, or once or twice a month, EVERY DAY! It’s the only way you will see results, as long as you stick with it.

“Rome was not built in a day, but it wasn’t built by sitting on your ass either.”

6. Drink more water.

Drinking water throughout the day has so many benefits for the human body; it should be a staple in your diet and in your lifestyle. It keeps you hydrated, it assists with muscle recovery and nutrient transportation, it keeps your skin hydrated, and the list could go on and on, so drink up!

Many people think losing fat and getting in shape is such a complicated process since you have to deal with figuring out an effective diet with x amount of protein and x amount of calories and then you need to figure out what to eat and what not to eat, and then you have to put together a training plan and whats the best form of cardio and aaahhh!

It can become quite disorientating and confusing, but it really does not have to be so complicated.

Here are 6 very simple tactics which you can slowly start to implement in your everyday life to get you on the right track to losing fat and becoming healthier without us even talking about a ‘diet’ or specific training programme.

Now don’t think you are going to find some magical information here,

you probably already know or have heard of most of these tips, but now YOU need to put them into practice!

1. Drink more water.

Drinking more water has so many benefits. It will keep you and your skin properly hydrated which will keep your skin soft and can help to reduce wrinkles. It also helps with providing you with more energy, as when you are dehydrated your energy levels and your mind’s ability to focus often take a dip to compensate for the lack of water. Drinking more water also helps with controlling your appetite allowing you to feel fuller for longer.

2. Reduce processed foods and sugar in your diet.

Now notice I said REDUCE rather than completely eliminate. We are only human and thus I know how difficult it is to completely eliminate these types of foods from our diets especially in this day and age; and more often than not, if we suddenly go on a very strict diet which requires us to stop eating specific things, it’s more likely that we will develop cravings much quicker.

The reason to avoid processed food, is because there are so many different ingredients in the products these days which can be quite detrimental to our health. They also contain a lot of useless calories and hardly any vital nutrients which our bodies really do not need. And YES fast food does fall under processed food!

The thing to take away here is that yes you can have that piece of chocolate every now and again, just do not over do it, and try to opt for ‘healthier alternatives’ such as choosing home made biscuits rather than processed biscuits from a shop which are loaded with trans fats and preservatives.

3. Eat more vegetables and fiber.

Natural, organic vegetables are full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals all necessary for a healthy mind and body. They also contain a vital nutrient, fiber. Fiber helps with ‘cleaning’ the inside of your body and helps with keeping you fuller for longer, also aiding in reducing cravings. Your body actually uses more energy to digest some vegetables which are high in fiber, for example broccoli, than are in the actual vegetable! So in some sense you are burning a few calories while you eat it!

4. Start some form of weight training.

Weight training builds muscle and burns calories. Muscle burns more calories at rest than fat. Therefore BUILD MUSCLE! When you train with weights, especially when doing the big movements (deadlifts, squats etc) you stimulate the release and production of growth hormone. Growth hormone is responsible for many things within your body, from increasing muscle size, fat burning, reducing wrinkles, to growing strong hair and nails.

So we can see why it is a good thing to try to maximize growth hormone production within our bodies. Also weight training burns A LOT of calories, more than most forms of cardio at the same time as building muscle. There are many different forms of weight training, all you have to do is find something that you enjoy and which works for you. Now why wouldn’t you want to weight train?

5. BUILD your cardio up.

Too often people have the idea that in order to lose fat they need to do hours and hours of cardio. So once they have decided they want to get in shape they immediately start doing cardio 7 days a week for an hour or so a day. Then after a few weeks they wonder why they have not lost much weight since they are exercising so much.

You see the body is a highly adaptable ‘machine’ so in order for you to continually progress and lose fat, in this instance, there needs to be room for change and additions.

If you are already doing cardio 7 days a week it is quite difficult to add anymore cardio into your schedule as it will become far too excessive. So instead rather start with adding some cardio 2 or 3 days a week for around 20 minutes and work on improving or adding to this every week or every two weeks.

You can do this by raising the intensity slightly, or increasing the number of minutes, or adding one more session of cardio on a different day or changing to a more HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) style of cardio. By doing this you can continually progress and will not allow your body to become stagnant and too used to one thing.

6. Be consistent with everything that you do.

I think this is extremely vital when it comes to doing anything. In order for you to lose weight you need to ensure you are consistent with your eating, with your training and resting. If you start exercising and eating better then you stop for a period of time and then start again, then stop again, you will never achieve the results that you want.

There is no quick way of getting in shape, it does take time and it does take consistency and commitment. That’s why it should really become your ‘life style’ and not a two month course.

You need to be focused, disciplined and dedicated to what you want to achieve.

Every time I get sick or get the flu, the big question comes into my mind, ‘should I train or shouldn’t I?’ Then I start to think about my progress and how I just have to get to the gym and I keep trying to justify it to myself, thinking I will be fine and I won’t make it worse. And every time that I forced myself to the gym, nothing got better, I just realized it too late that I should take a breather and then ended up being out of action for at least a week! So I have learnt the hard way, and yet I still try to justify it to myself because of that need to train.

But what I have learnt is that, if you get sick you need to first accept it and you NEED TO STAY OUT OF THE GYM (OR DO NOT DO ANY FORM OF CARDIO EXERCISE).

You need to focus on resting and recovering, and not overexerting yourself and your heart, especially if it is a viral infection. If it’s a viral infection like flu, your heart tissue can become inflamed and is more prone to damage during high intensity aerobic activity. It can even cause a sudden heart attack, so you really do not want to harm your heart muscle and tissue by exercising while you have that infection.

Now I can understand when you initially get sick the first day or two you can still train because you are not really sure if it’s, just for example, a slight sniffle, and it may not develop into anything else after that. But should it get any worse, stay away from strenuous exercise. A decent guide to use, is if your symptoms are above your neck and not too severe, you can still train. For instance just a slight headache or a slight runny nose should be ok to train with. But once you start feeling it in the rest of your body and start to feel weak, then you do need to take a step back and rest. Take a cough for example. When you cough and feel it hurt in your chest, then that’s a sign that you need to relax and get it treated first. When in doubt though, just REST and avoid putting that extra stress and pressure on your body.

See when you get sick, most of your body’s resources will be centered on trying to treat the sickness and get rid of the bad cells and bacteria causing the condition. So now if you decide to go and train your body has to now split its reserves to repair your muscles AND recover from the workout in addition to still fight the illness. So this will most likely prolong the treatment process and may even make it worse. What can you do if you do get sick? I try to avoid medication at all costs, so when I get sick I load up on vitamin C, a lot of fruits and vegetables, and A LOT of WATER, and green tea with honey and lemon all coupled with a lot of rest. It usually does the trick within a few days.

Sometimes it’s your body’s way of telling you to relax and take a break as it needs some time to recover completely. So it can be a good thing to rest it out and come back in a week or 2 stronger and more focused than ever!
