It’s important to fit physical activity and exercise into your daily routine, but nine-to-five jobs don’t always give you a lot of opportunities to do so. That is why many people choose to work out at the gym after work. However, after a long day, that can sometimes be easier said than done.

Since we know how important your health is to you, we have compiled some tips for how you can cut out the excuses and stay motivated to continue your after-work gym sessions.

Plan Ahead and Create a Routine

If you really want to make a post-work gym visit part of your daily routine, then you first need to create a plan and stick to it. If you go about your day willy-nilly, then you are bound to forget about the gym from time to time. Eventually, you will find that you aren’t going to the gym at all. Make it official by marking your calendar and setting reminders on your phone that will sound off at the end of the work day and remind you that it is time to get to the gym.

Since anyone can ignore an alarm, you also need to make this routine as consistent as possible so you stay motivated. It can take 21 days of following the same behavior every day to form a habit. If you can go that long, then you have a good chance of sticking with that routine going forwards.

Set Goals

Another way to stay motivated is to create an objective for yourself. In many cases, that will be a certain weight loss goal that you hope to meet. Write that goal down on your calendar and hang it up on your cubicle or office wall so you see it every day as a reminder that you want to hit the gym. Make sure to keep your goals manageable so you don’t fail before you begin.

People tend to make many excuses that prohibit them from exercising, but you must plan ahead so you have everything you need. Then, you won’t have a reason not to hit the gym. Some people might forget their phone charger so they don’t have enough battery to listen to their music. This allows them to make the excuse that without music, they can’t go to the gym.

Others may forget their contact lenses. If you typically wear glasses, remember that you can still work out with eye glasses by attaching a strap that will keep them snugly on your face, or you can focus on stretching and less-active exercises on the days that you have to workout with your glasses. Find workarounds to these common problems instead of using them as excuses to skip a workout.

Stay Energized All Day

Another reason why many people fail to follow through on their after-work gym visit is that they are tired after a long day. You may wrap up a harsh day of talking to clients and filing reports, and you just want to go home and rest. You may already be lifting heavy objects at a warehouse job. Whatever the case is, you may need to make a change to your daily routine so that you are not so exhausted at the end of the day.

The first step is to make sure that you are getting enough sleep every night. When you don’t get your seven to nine hours of sleep every night, then you wake up feeling groggy. Even if you have a cup of coffee, you could still feel fatigued before your day even gets started. If you have trouble falling asleep each night, then you can correct your circadian rhythm by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Also, avoid drinking coffee or eating too close to bedtime, or you could have an upset stomach that further delays sleep.

Even if you get enough sleep, you may still feel groggy after lunch. You can continue to stay energized the whole day by incorporating a workout-friendly diet. Avoid fast food that will make you feel sluggish. Instead, eat foods higher in protein, like chickpeas or tofu. It’s also important to eat plenty of vegetables.

You can prevent exhaustion by drinking enough water to avoid dehydration. Dehydration can slow the blood flow to your brain which makes your heart work harder. Make sure to drink plenty of water during your workout, as well.

Take Your Fitness to the Next Level

If you still lack the proper motivation to go to the gym every day but you really want to improve your health, then you may need to try something new. For instance, you could promise yourself a reward if you meet a certain workout goal, such as a special dinner out with your spouse or a day at the amusement park.

You can also find a personal ally to partner up with, such as a coworker or a friend who works close by. Make a plan to meet with them every day at the same time, and you can go to the gym together. That way, you can spot each other and provide the encouragement that both of you may need to continue your routine.

Another great way to get serious about your health is to hire a personal trainer that you meet with several times a week. This is a great motivation to go after work because you have a coach that wants to see you succeed. You’ll also remember that you are paying for their services, so if you don’t go then you are wasting money. These days, cash is not something most can afford to waste.

As you can see, there are many ways that you can find the mental strength and motivation to go to the gym after work and improve your physical health. If you are serious about improvement, then consider these tips and you will more than likely reach your goals.

Staying positive and motivated can help make things happen. But it’s hard to imagine a single person in the world who finds staying motivated difficult. A person can experience many events in life that can challenge an optimistic attitude. But there are ways to help you through those times. Here are some ways to keep your eyes and mind on the brighter side of life.

1. Identify Your Goal

What’s your dream or ambition? Do you have a strong desire to achieve something? If yes, it means that it’s your goal. It’s the target that you should focus on and strive to achieve. You should set a realistic goal and give yourself a timeframe to complete it. For example, if you want to get back into shape, you should discipline yourself to keep a workout schedule. Book personal training with a fitness coach that will also help you stay accountable. You can check out Fit Club NY if you’re looking for personal training and nutrition assistance on your fitness goals for example.

Consider Chunking

Do you tend to look at a task and think how difficult it is? It’s a primary reason why procrastination happens. If you have a 20-page report to do and look at it as a whole, you tend to think how impossible it would be even if the deadline is still a few days away. Instead of perceiving it as an impossible task, it’s the best plan to break the project into smaller, manageable pieces that you can work on per day.

If you have a week to finish it, break the pages into five to seven ways, depending on what your schedule allows. Let’s say do four to five pages per day, so you don’t feel overwhelmed.

Make Your Routine Fun

Your attitude toward a task is your driving force. If you like a specific sport, such as basketball, one of your friends may not like it the way you do. Unlike yourself, your friend has almost no interest in it because he doesn’t think it’s fun. Would you stick to a hobby or interest if you don’t find it enjoyable?

Fitness Coach Jenna Brust always wanted to continue being an athlete even after she graduated. She loved watching IFBB shows, and that motivated her to keep training as she finds it fun. Later on, she was able to compete in her first IFBB show herself.

You may aim to become good at sports, music, or perhaps cooking. You can think of ways of how to make practice time fun like what did Coach Jenna did. Maybe you also share the same interest with other people and can make it more fun for them. You can always look for ways to make the things fun.

Pinpoint the Problem

As soon as you feel that your motivation is depleting, you can start by determining why. You can feel overwhelmed, tired, bored, or maybe there’s an outside problem affecting your motivation, such as family or financial problems.

When you feel like these external forces are hindering you, it’s best to work on them first to eliminate these issues as quickly as possible. Putting it off and letting the core problem continue to build will be another burden on your shoulders.

Be with Like-Minded People

The people you surround yourself with will affect your motivation. If you’re friends with people who have the same goals as you, you can feel that you’re not alone in your journey.

Looking for smart people to learn from is one of the best ways to uplift yourself and stay motivated. Surrounding yourself with people who are positive-minded and adapting their habits can help you work on your own goals.

You can build professional relationships with individuals that you see as an inspiration. This also includes your family and friends who will support your goals. The relationships you keep in your life are strong reminders of why you should stay motivated.

Limit Distractions

Useless things in life can derail you from achieving your goals. Distraction can come from television, phones, video games, or excess socialization. While it’s alright to relax and unwind when you feel tired or overwhelmed, it will depend on how much you can discipline yourself to get back on track.

Manage your time better and block technology and other influences that aren’t contributing to your well-being, including people. How fast you can get to your goal depends on dedicating your time and energy towards reaching it.

In Conclusion

Staying motivated also depends on your willingness to do whatever it takes to reach your goals. If you keep procrastinating, or if you quickly lose your way, that may mean that you don’t know what you want. If your actions aren’t aligned with your goals, it’s simply a waste of time. Make sure you know what you want and work on your resolve from there.

If you’re on your way to trying to do something in your life, be it losing weight or just living a better lifestyle, and you find yourself ready to give in, or you begin to doubt yourself and your abilities, then read on.

Here you will find a few strategies to help keep you motivated, keep your mind and body on the right track and hopefully will help you stay focused and NOT give up!

1. Set goals

You need to decide exactly what you want to do and create a vision for it. By having set goals, with deadlines attached to them, you will have no choice but to be accountable for their outcome. This will keep you on the right line since when you see your goals you will constantly be reminded of what you are working towards and what you need to do in order to achieve those objectives.

2. Write down your goals and make a list

Many times people try to keep everything in their head. From simple things like shopping items and errands to do, to big decisions you need to think about. By keeping it all in your head you will eventually stress yourself out by trying to juggle all of those thoughts, and the even worse possibility is that you could end up forgetting most of it. By having your goals written down, it is easy to always go back to that piece of paper and reassure yourself of what you are trying to do. Also, by having a list of everything that you need to do (such as simple things like errands and shopping lists) you eliminate any guess work where you can possibly forget what you need or what you need to do.

Another important aspect of this to remember is that the more you actually see and read something, the more you will remember it, allowing it to manifest in your mind.

3. Reflect on your goals DAILY

It’s of no use setting goals and writing them down then tucking them away to be forgotten about. You need to keep them visually available to yourself every day, every moment if possible. Paste them up at your desk, or put them up on your kitchen fridge. Wherever you will see them constantly.

Read them and actively visualize each goal, and allow them to set in your mind and become second nature to you, almost as if they have already happened.

4. Don’t be too hard on yourself

We are all only human after all, so we are going to make mistakes, we are going to get cravings and give in to them at times.

Once it’s done… It’s done. Do not dwell on the past, but learn from it.

Stay focused on the present and move forward without giving up. Remember that life has ups as well as downs. We need to not necessarily forget about the ‘bad’ things we did, or ‘wrong’ decisions we made, but rather use them to learn from, in order to not make the same mistake twice.

5. Don’t be extreme – be realistic

Be realistic about what you want to do. Do not think you are going to lose 20 kg in one day and look like a ripped cover model so quickly. Everything takes time, dedication and hard work. So yes you can still lose that 20Kg, but now set a realistic time frame to achieve it.

6. Have fun and be happy in everything you do

If you hate going to the gym and lifting weights, then get creative; find alternative ways of working out which will be fun and enjoyable for YOU. There are so many different things to do nowadays, so just do some research or even better invent your own way!

7. Try new things

Constantly try new and different things, whether it be trying different training techniques or taking up dance classes which you have never done before. You should always challenge yourself to keep you out of your comfort zone and to keep yourself from getting stuck doing the same things day in and day out which can become boring without you even knowing it. It will also help you to not become so used to certain things and allow little chance for your body to adapt to one thing.

8. Get creative in the kitchen

When people think about bodybuilding diets or even eating healthily, they immediately think about broccoli and bland boiled chicken breasts or hake. There are so many natural herbs and spices which you can use to create a very tasty and healthy meal. You just need to do some research and try different recipes with the right ingredients. Do not fall prey to eating a bland diet, dreading each meal. This will only lead you to cheat on your diet. BUT, if that bland simple diet works for you, then by all means carry on!
