<h2 style="text-align: center;">Your transformation is truly phenomenal! Tell us a bit about how you were before, and what made you take the plunge and change your life?</h2>
<p>Well, I&#8217;ve always been into weight training since high school but never thought about doing competitions. In 2008, a friend of mine took part in a bodybuilding show, and I went to support him. I was way out of shape.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;After seeing the show for the first time, I was very motivated to get into that condition. So I told myself, I think I should enter a show because I never saw my abs lol.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>From there on after winning my first show, my whole lifestyle changed. I continued seriously with my training and watched my eating habits.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3488" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-06.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 06" width="600" height="550" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-06.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-06-300x275.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What do you love about it and what keeps you motivated?</h2>
<p>As a personal trainer, I love doing the things I do and that is to inspire and change people’s lives.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think my passion for the things I enjoy doing keeps me motivated. Seeing client’s smiling and having fun, telling me how great the feel or even helping a random member in the gym makes me become a better trainer and athlete.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3492" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-10.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 10" width="600" height="449" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-10.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-10-300x224.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What competitions have you competed in and your placings?</h2>
<ul style="list-style-type: square;">
<li>IFBB Eastern Province Novice | Welterweight U 75 Kg | 1st</li>
<li>IFBB SA Novice | U 75 Kg | Top 6</li>
<li>Shameen Classic | Senior Men | U 90 Kg | Top 5</li>
<li>IFBB Eastern Province Champs | Middleweight U 85 Kg | 1st</li>
<li>Friendly City Classic | U 90 Kg | 1st</li>
<li>WBFF | Muscle Model</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3484" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-02.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 02" width="600" height="550" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-02.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-02-300x275.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Advice for someone wanting to start competing?</h2>
<p>Go watch a few shows and see what it’s all about. Look at the condition of the athletes so that you get an idea of how your competition would be. Decide which show you are going to enter and plan accordingly. And remember you are your own competition.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Free weights versus machines?</h2>
<p>I enjoy doing both but I prefer free weights over machines.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Free weights help with strengthening the core and stabilization muscles that’s why you won’t find me on the floor doing isolated core exercises. Machines allow you to isolate the muscle group you are working and bring out detail.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What are your future plans?</h2>
<p>On a competitive level, I want to compete at the worlds and represent my country.  I also want to open a lifestyle center which will have different divisions such as fitness, food, and therapy.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3487" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-05.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 05" width="600" height="902" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-05.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-05-199x300.jpg 199w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Do you follow periods of bulking and cutting down or manage to stay lean year round?</h2>
<p>In the past I use to, but since the beginning of 2012 when I started prepping the Shameen Classic, I basically tried to keep 70 percent of condition throughout the off season. That way it makes my prep so much easier and also allows me to see my lean muscle gains.</p>
<p>Dirty bulking is out; I try to eat clean in the off season and do cardio. My body fat in the off season stays between 7-9 percent.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3485" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-03.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 03" width="600" height="902" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-03.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-03-199x300.jpg 199w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What’s the longest break you ever took from training? Do you think you need to take a break, or can you manage to train year round?</h2>
<p>Longest time off I would say was a week; rest is good. I believe rest is important for recovery especially from doing weight training. Elbow and knee joints work overtime with most movements which take a lot of strain. I go for my regular massage every month which helps with muscle stiffness, circulation and relaxation.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Take us through an average day of yours:</h2>
<ul style="list-style-type: disc;">
<li>I wake up 4 am Mondays to Fridays</li>
<li>My first client is at 5 am and my last client for the day is 7 pm</li>
<li>I will make time for myself to train between clients or some days I train with them because they like to challenge me, which is a lot of fun and motivation for them</li>
<li>It’s a very long day so most of my day is spent at the “office”…the gym lol</li>
<li>When I get home I need to prepare food for the next day</li>
<li>So I will be in bed at around 10 pm</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3486" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-04.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 04" width="600" height="1255" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-04.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-04-143x300.jpg 143w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-04-489x1024.jpg 489w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Give us a brief description of your philosophy on your diet, pre contest and during the off season:</h2>
<p>My off season I keep my diet pretty clean, except for weekends, I do have a cheat meal, but I try to stay away from too many fast food places.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;So 70% of what I do during pre-contest, I do during the off season.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>I don’t do the whole “I’m bulking” thing. I want to see my gains in the right areas of my body especially where you need to make improvements, by maintaining a low body fat percentage.</p>
<p>I keep things very simple during pre-contest, I’m not very scientific, you have to figure out a formula that works best for you.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3489" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-07.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 07" width="600" height="901" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-07.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-07-199x300.jpg 199w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What supplements do you use if any?  Does the timing of supplements play a crucial role in their success?</h2>
<p>I’m sponsored by Supplements SA, so I only use their products.</p>
<p>Timing does play an important role if you want optimum results.</p>
<blockquote><p>I use:</p></blockquote>
<ul style="list-style-type: circle;">
<li>A clean protein with no carbs like 100% Whey Isolate</li>
<li>BCAA’s for recovery</li>
<li>ZMA</li>
<li>Vitamins and minerals</li>
</ul>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Give us a brief description of your philosophy on your training and on average how long do you workout for?</h2>
<p>My training in the off season is the same as during contest prep. Only change during contest prep would be to up the intensity, like shorter rest periods, more reps, drop sets, etc.</p>
<p>I do cardio both off season and during prep.</p>
<p>Weight training sessions would normally take me 45 minutes to complete, then I will do 20 – 30 minutes cardio afterwards, or I will split my session into morning cardio and weights in the evening, vice versa.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3490" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-08.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 08" width="600" height="1435" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-08.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-08-125x300.jpg 125w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-08-428x1024.jpg 428w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What’s your favorite form of cardio?</h2>
<p>I don’t do high intensity cardio. I enjoy doing the stair climber or walking on an incline at a moderate pace. I do enjoy functional training as well.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What would you say are the three best exercises you can do to really focus on and build your quads?</h2>
<ol>
<li>
<h4>Squats</h4>
</li>
<li>
<h4>Leg press</h4>
</li>
<li>
<h4>Walking lunges</h4>
</li>
</ol>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Barbell squats should never be excluded from your quad workout, that’s a gym rule I live by.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>After my squats I like to blast my quads at the leg press machine doing high reps ranging between 20 – 40 reps per set using a moderate weight like 240 – 300 kg for 5 sets. Walking lunges to add detail and separation between your hamstrings and quads.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3483" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-01.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 01" width="600" height="756" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-01.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-01-238x300.jpg 238w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Favorite bodybuilders:</h2>
<p>Jay Cutler, Kai Greene and Victor Martinez.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Which do you prefer and why.  Today’s bodybuilders like Jay Cutler and Phil Heath, or the smaller physiques like Frank Zane.</h2>
<p>Much respect to the new age bodybuilders like Jay and Phil, but I like the more aesthetic physique like Frank and our local hero Jaco De Bruyn.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Favourite Quote:</h2>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Don’t be afraid of failure for it is a necessary step on the path to success.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3491" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-09.jpg" alt="Justin Roussouw 09" width="600" height="902" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-09.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Justin-Roussouw-09-199x300.jpg 199w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Advice for someone wanting to change their lifestyle and achieve their ideal physique?</h2>
<p>Create a mental picture of how you want your physique. Thinking is already an action and believing you can, takes you already halfway there.</p>
<p>Start setting short term goals, like cleaning up your diet (cut out junk food, instant meals, sodas etc.) and track your progress weekly. Patience is very important, I tell that to my clients. It didn&#8217;t take you overnight to get fat, so does dropping a dress size.</p>
<p>So it’s a continuous process, just keep going, you will get there.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Where can people get hold of you?</h2>

<strong>Occupation: </strong><span style="color: #000000;">Brand Executive for OPI</span></p></blockquote>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">How long have you been training for and how did you get started?</h2>
<p>I started training when I was about 16. But nothing too serious; just cardio and the circuit! My Dad used to do Bodybuilding Shows so I would tag along with him to the gym every now and again!</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;About 2 years ago, I met a very influential man in the fitness industry and I decided to start training to compete!&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Did it come easily for you or was it quite a ‘life’ adjustment?</h2>
<p>Because I have grown up in a fairly active family it came quite easy. I am also SO passionate about being fit and living a healthy lifestyle that it really is something I enjoy!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3004" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-01.jpg" alt="Roxy Firmani 01" width="600" height="847" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-01.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-01-212x300.jpg 212w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What do you love about it?</h2>
<p>I love knowing that my body is in its peak condition! Being fit makes doing anything and everything a lot easier and living a clean and healthy lifestyle ensures that I rarely get sick, always feel energetic and enthusiastic, and that I will have better luck with my health and body condition as I age!</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What competitions have you competed in and your placings?</h2>
<blockquote><p>2012</p></blockquote>
<ul style="list-style-type: circle;">
<li>Fitness SA</li>
<li>Body Beautiful SA, Bikini, 3rd</li>
</ul>
<p>Last year I competed in my first show, Fitness SA. Although I did not place in the Top 10 it motivated me to work harder for my next show. I then competed in Body Beautiful SA and placed 3rd in the Bikini Division line-up!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3009" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-06.jpg" alt="Roxy Firmani 06" width="600" height="550" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-06.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-06-300x275.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">You were a part of the JAR (Nutrition Store) team. How did that work out and did it help with your training and dieting?</h2>
<p>Being part of team JAR was and is amazing.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;This is a tough industry and having a group of people to support and motivate you all the time is great.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>It is also nice to have a team of people with different knowledge about training and dieting. We can all put our minds together to better our understanding of what works and what doesn’t!</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What are your future plans?</h2>
<p>This year I plan to compete in 3 or 4 shows, the main one being WBFF SA on the 19th and 20th of July! I also want to do a nutrition course and try to get more involved in helping other people get into the fitness competition scene! I love helping people with training and nutrition and it is my dream to one day, make a career out of it!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3008" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-05.jpg" alt="Roxy Firmani 05" width="600" height="600" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-05.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-05-150x150.jpg 150w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-05-300x300.jpg 300w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-05-125x125.jpg 125w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Take us through an average day of yours:</h2>
<blockquote><p>Because I work full time I have a very early start to my day!</p></blockquote>
<ul style="list-style-type: square;">
<li>I wake up at 4:30am, gulp down my Titan Labs Isomax or Slim Core shake and go to the gym. I’ll do a small amount of cardio (just to get the blood flowing) and then hit the weights section!</li>
<li>After that its home to shower, eat and get to work by 8am.</li>
<li>During my contest season I will normally hit the gym after work (two or three times a week) to get in an extra bit of cardio.</li>
<li>Then its home to chill, prep my meals for the next day and get to bed for some beauty sleep <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/11.2.0/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></li>
</ul>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Give us a description of your philosophy on your diet:</h2>
<p>I have quite a balanced philosophy on my diet. I don’t believe in a so called ‘Diet’, I believe that you should <strong>eat clean</strong> (no processed foods) and<strong> eat regularly</strong>! I <strong>eat 5 – 6 small meals</strong> a day and I ensure I get a good amount of <strong>Protein, Fats (the good types) and Carbohydrates (Low GI)</strong>.</p>
<blockquote><p>Here is a sample of my meals that I pretty much stick to all year round:</p></blockquote>
<ul style="list-style-type: disc;">
<li>5am: Titan Labs Isomax/ Slim Core Shake</li>
<li>7:30am: 50g of Oats and 3-4 Egg Whites</li>
<li>11am: Chicken Salad with Avo/Nuts</li>
<li>1pm: Chicken Breast with Vegetables and Sweet Potato/Brown Rice</li>
<li>4pm: Another Titan Labs Shake and Some Almonds</li>
<li>7pm: Lean Protein Source (Chicken/ Fish/ Ostrich) with Vegetables</li>
<li>10pm: Slow release protein (Low Fat Cottage Cheese/ Titan Labs Aftermath)</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3012" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-09.jpg" alt="Roxy Firmani 09" width="600" height="438" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-09.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-09-300x219.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What keeps you motivated and so disciplined to get through your training and sticking to your diet day in and day out?</h2>
<p>I find that I am most motivated and disciplined when I stick to a routine and have a goal to work towards!</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Setting goals is something you should do every month. I make sure the goals I set are realistic and are measurable.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Every month I sit down and measure my current goals, and then re-evaluate them accordingly. Without goals there would be nothing to work towards! And without a routine it becomes very hard to maintain discipline!</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What’s your favorite healthy meal?</h2>
<p>I absolutely love the good fats! Avo’s, Almonds, Peanut Butter; I could eat these all day every day! I also love my Titan Labs Aftermath Dessert Protein! It is such a good thing to eat before you go to bed because it keeps a constant source of energy for your muscles while you sleep AND it tastes like chocolate mousse! I always make mine and put it in the freezer for a bit so it is like chocolate ice-cream <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/11.2.0/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3006" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-03.jpg" alt="Roxy Firmani 03" width="600" height="801" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-03.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-03-224x300.jpg 224w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What’s your supplementation like?</h2>
<blockquote><p>There are a few supplements I use on a daily basis:</p></blockquote>
<ul style="list-style-type: square;">
<li><strong>Multi-vitamin</strong>: This is essential when you train on a daily basis</li>
<li><strong>Protein Shake:</strong> A quick and easy way to get your protein requirements, and great for when you are on the go, need to have a snack OR straight after a training session!</li>
<li><strong>BCAA’s:</strong> These are essential when you train. They aid in muscle recovery and also prevent the breakdown of muscle tissue. I mix a serving of Glutablast and Amino Rush from Titan Labs and sip on that while I train. It tastes great and helps your muscles while you train!</li>
<li><strong>Fat Burner:</strong> Only during my competition season! Good to help get leaner for my shows! I would highly recommend Xcelerate from Titan Labs – it is by far one of the best on the market these days!</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3007" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-04.jpg" alt="Roxy Firmani 04" width="600" height="516" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-04.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-04-300x258.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Give us a description of your philosophy on your training and on average how long do you work out for?<b> </b></h2>
<p>I don’t believe that you need to spend hours in the gym every day! I spend about 45-60 minutes at the gym and believe me that is more than enough. As long as you make that time count! I do a split training program, so I train each muscle group once a week (except for legs).</p>
<blockquote><p>So for example I will train:</p></blockquote>
<ul style="list-style-type: circle;">
<li>Chest on Monday</li>
<li>Quads on Tuesday</li>
<li>Back on Wednesday</li>
<li>Hamstrings and Glutes on Thursday</li>
<li>Arms and Friday</li>
<li>Shoulders on Saturday</li>
<li>Sunday’s I rest!</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3011" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-08.jpg" alt="Roxy Firmani 08" width="600" height="1535" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-08.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-08-117x300.jpg 117w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-08-400x1024.jpg 400w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">How do you measure your progress? And how often?</h2>
<p>I do not believe in the scale! Body weight is such an ineffective way to track progress, especially because muscle weighs more than fat! I believe it’s how you feel, look in the mirror and fit in your clothes!</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What’s your take on utilizing cardio in your training regime? What’s your favorite form of cardio?</h2>
<p>Like I said earlier I always do a few minutes of Cardio before I start my weight training session! My favorite type is High Intensity Interval Training. This is bouts of high intensity cardio with rests in between! So for example I will sprint for 1 minute and then walk for 1 minute for up to 20 minutes.</p>
<p>I also do steady state cardio once or twice a week. That is medium intensity cardio for a longer period of time (about 40-60 minutes)</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What’s your secret to having rock solid abs? What would you say are some of the best exercises women should include in their ab work outs?</h2>
<blockquote><p><strong>The key to Abs is Diet!</strong> You can do 1000 sit ups a day but if your diet is wrong you will never see those abs! So keep your diet clean. I love to do weighted crunches and leg ups!</p></blockquote>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3005" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-02.jpg" alt="Roxy Firmani 02" width="600" height="550" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-02.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-02-300x275.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;"><b></b>Fitness models or bodybuilders?</h2>
<p>The person who I look up to most, the one that got me interested in this industry, is Jaco De Bruyn. He has been a Mentor and an Inspiration from the get go. And then of course there is my coach, Kirk Wentworth! He is the most knowledgeable, passionate and helpful person I know! He really has helped me get to where I am now and helps me with all of my competition prep!</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Favorite female fitness icon(s):</h2>
<p>Wow I have so many! At the moment I must say I have a bit of a crush on Bella Falconi, her physique is just mind blowing! I also follow Anna Delia, Jamie Eason, and locals such as Anna Wood!</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Favorite Quote(s):</h2>
<p>This one sums it all up:</p>
<blockquote><p>“Eat Clean. Train Mean. Stay Lean.”</p></blockquote>
<p>I also love</p>
<blockquote><p>“It never gets easier, you just get better.”</p></blockquote>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3013" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-10.jpg" alt="Roxy Firmani 10" width="600" height="901" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-10.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Roxy-Firmani-10-199x300.jpg 199w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What were some of the mistakes you made when starting out in the gym?</h2>
<p>Thinking that cardio was going to give me a toned physique! I see so many girls at the gym every day slaving away on the treadmill and their bodies never really seem to change! I also don’t think people realise how big a role your diet plays in seeing the results you want!</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Girls need to stop being afraid of both the weights section and protein shakes!&#8221;</strong></p></blockquote>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Advice for someone wanting to change their lifestyle and achieve their ideal physique?</h2>
<p>Take it one step at a time. Too many changes at once can become overwhelming and disheartening. Also make sure you get proper advice from someone who knows what they are talking about. I’ve seen some crazy diets and programs given to friends that are just ridiculous!</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;My rule of thumb is that the person you get your advice from, should have the physique you wish to achieve, that way you know that it worked for them and should in turn work for you!&#8221;</p></blockquote>

<h2>Quick Stats</h2>
<blockquote><p><strong>Name:</strong>  <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Johnny Starr</span><br />
<strong>Age:</strong>  <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">23</span><br />
<strong>Height:</strong>  <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">1,84 m</span><br />

<strong>Current city:</strong>  <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Melbourne, Australia</span><br />
<strong>Occupation:</strong>  <span style="color: #000000;">Real Estate Agent</span></p></blockquote>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">At what age did you start training consistently and how did you get into this lifestyle?</h2>
<p>I started lifting at a very young age; when I was 14 and 9 months (the earliest you are allowed to starting working in Aus).  I saved up and bought my first bench press.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I literally did incline and flat bench every night in my garage before I went to bed for months on end.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>I then joined a local gym with all my mates at 16 and have consistently been training ever since.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1952" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-01.jpg" alt="Johnny Starr 01" width="600" height="680" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-01.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-01-264x300.jpg 264w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-01-250x283.jpg 250w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-01-202x230.jpg 202w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1953" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-02.jpg" alt="Johnny Starr 02" width="600" height="722" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-02.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-02-249x300.jpg 249w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-02-250x300.jpg 250w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-02-191x230.jpg 191w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What do you love about it and what keeps you motivated?</h2>
<p>I love looking back at older photos of myself and then realizing that even though I’m not the biggest or most shredded guy going around, I have still come a very long way from my early ectomorph days.  I was also nearly murdered in a stabbing incident which woke me up and made me realize that life is far too short to not achieve greatness.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What are your thoughts on competing?</h2>
<p>I didn&#8217;t start training to compete and it has never really been something I have considered.  Though allot of people of recent have suggested it might be a path I should consider….</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1957" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-06.jpg" alt="Johnny Starr 06" width="600" height="900" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-06.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-06-200x300.jpg 200w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-06-250x375.jpg 250w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-06-153x230.jpg 153w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What are your future plans?</h2>
<p>Growing up I lacked allot of guidance regarding nutrition and training, and also received some terrible advice from people whom I thought knew what they were talking about.  I wish I had someone like myself now when I was young who could show me how to do things properly rather than wasting my time in the gym.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;So my plans for the future are to help inspire, motivate and educate new lifters to be better in all aspects of life not only gym.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Take us through an average day of yours:</h2>
<p>I am currently in a “lean bulk mode” …so I will wake up, have my vitamins and BCAA’s and a bowl of oats.  Cook my eggs, drive to work eat 4-5 meals at work.  Then come home have another meal, then go train, come home again, prepare my meals for the next day…troll facebook and go to bed <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/11.2.0/72x72/1f61b.png" alt="😛" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1954" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-03.jpg" alt="Johnny Starr 03" width="600" height="550" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-03.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-03-300x275.jpg 300w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-03-250x230.jpg 250w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Give us a brief description of your philosophy on your diet.</h2>
<blockquote><p>Below is my current <strong>lean bulk diet:</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Please note, I have never ever counted calories or macros.  I go by the way my body is looking.  For example, if I need to lean up I cut out most carbs.</p>
<ul style="list-style-type: square;">
<li>6:45am – 10g BCAA’s/glutamine/creatine/2 slices watermelon – protein shake                                                                      Krill oil, Vitamin C, Inner Health Plus, Multi V</li>
<li>7:30 – Bowl of Oats with Berries (add 1 scoop protein and cinnamon).  8 Egg whites and 2 whole eggs scrambled.</li>
<li>10:00 – 100g sweet potatoes, ½ cup red kidney beans, Broccoli, can of tuna in spring water, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar</li>
<li>1:00pm – Same as above but change Tuna for lean meat (Kangaroo/Chicken Liver/Veal)</li>
<li>3:00 – Same as above (change meat)</li>
<li>4:30 – protein shake -WPI (I use ISO SENSATION 93)</li>
<li>6:00 – 200g chicken/lean meat, 100gram sweet potatoes/broccoli</li>
</ul>
<blockquote><p>Pre Workout – BCAA’s (I use XTEND)/creatine/vitargo<br />
Intra workout – BCAA’s (XTEND)<br />
Post workout – Immediately 2 big slices watermelon THEN PWI Protein shake with creatine</p></blockquote>
<ul style="list-style-type: square;">
<li>9:45 – 200g red meat, sweet potatoes/broccoli</li>
<li>11:30 – (before sleep) Casein protein shake, Glutamine, GABBA, ZMA</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1956" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-05.jpg" alt="Johnny Starr 05" width="600" height="900" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-05.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-05-200x300.jpg 200w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-05-250x375.jpg 250w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-05-153x230.jpg 153w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Are you a firm believer in using supplements?  If so what are your top 3 fundamental supplements which you use and which you would recommend?</h2>
<p>I am lucky enough to have the support from AAA Supplements Knox, who in Melbourne are one of the biggest and best supplement stores.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>I LOVE</strong></p></blockquote>
<ul>
<li>ISO SENSATION 93 CHOCOLATE PWI protein.  (I use every day); low carb, high protein, easy to digest.</li>
<li>Xtend (especially during cardio, keeps me from going Catabolic)</li>
<li>Creatine.  I always use this when I am trying to put on size as I feel it helps with strength and fluid retention in the muscles.</li>
</ul>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1959" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-08.jpg" alt="Johnny Starr 08" width="600" height="550" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-08.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-08-300x275.jpg 300w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-08-250x230.jpg 250w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Give us a brief description of your philosophy on your training and on average how long do you workout for?</h2>
<p>I tend not to do anything too fancy with my training.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I usually train one body part a week and start my sessions with compound movements first as they recruit more muscle fibers&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>and better cellular breakdown (rather than doing an isolation movement for 15 minutes and using 3-4 muscles).<br />
I love to drop set and superset nearly every session, and every now and again I go very light weight and super high reps to mix it up.  Always trying to stimulate my body to grow and develop.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1955" src="http://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-04.jpg" alt="Johnny Starr 04" width="600" height="800" srcset="https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-04.jpg 600w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-04-225x300.jpg 225w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-04-250x333.jpg 250w, https://fitnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Johnny-Starr-04-172x230.jpg 172w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What’s your favorite form of cardio?</h2>
<p>If it wasn&#8217;t for those dirty house beats I would hate cardio!  But my favorite form is simply walking at 5 &#8211; 6 km per hour on full incline on a treadmill.<br />
I have never really done HIIT.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">What would you say are the best exercises you can do to really achieve well developed arms?</h2>
<p>As we all know, the triceps make up a large percentage of our arms, but I feel some times we focus too much on our biceps.</p>
<ul style="list-style-type: square;">
<li>Close grip bench press</li>
<li>Perfect curls with some drop sets have helped me over the years.</li>

<h2 style="text-align: center;">Do you believe in the philosophy of having a positive mindset in all that you do and visualizing everything that you want to achieve?</h2>
<p>I am a firm believer in this philosophy.  I like to visualize where I am going with my life and set myself short term and long term goals to work at.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I advise anyone reading this to remove any negative people from their lives as they will only bring you down.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>This is something I have done recently and since then things have only spiraled upwards.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">How do you measure your progress and how often?</h2>
<p>I used to be stuck on “HOW MUCH I WEIGHED” and was too concerned with packing on the KG’s.  This was a rookie mistake and I went through a terrible stage of getting fat from trying to eat everything in sight.  Though I reached 90 kg I looked terrible.  I now sit at approximately 80 kg with fairly low body fat….In other words don’t worry about the scales.<br />
I measure myself on how proportioned I look and usually how lean I can get <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/11.2.0/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<h2 style="text-align: center;">Favorite Fitness Models:</h2>
<p>My biggest inspiration hands down would be Zyzz.  I trained for years then saw him and wanted to take it to the next level. (RIP).  I also love Greg Plitt, Jaco De Bruyn, Ulissesjr, David Morin and my good friend and up and coming fitness model Jad Darwish.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Which do you prefer and why.  Today’s bodybuilders like Jay Cutler and Phil Heath, or the smaller physiques like Frank Zane.</h2>
<p>I think most people would agree that the bodybuilders of yesteryear looked much more appealing and realistic.  I have complete respect for today’s champions but would prefer to look like Zane in his peak because I feel it is more aesthetic and more achievable.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Favorite Quote:</h2>
<blockquote><p>“Don’t tell people you’re gonna do it, just get it done, it will speak for itself!” &#8211; Myself</p></blockquote>

<h2 style="text-align: center;">Advice for someone wanting to change their lifestyle and achieve their ideal physique?</h2>
<p>The best thing I ever did was seek advice from someone that was a professional.  In the space of 6 weeks I learnt more than I had learnt from 5 years of training.  Learn through other peoples mistakes instead of making your own.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;">Where can people get hold of you?</h2>
